Need some help getting the air pump cam pulley off an 83' 308qv

    The pulley that comes off the end of the rear bank exhaust cam that drives the air pump is unique to this model year. I got the roll pins out (no shear pin was present), but can not get the pulley off. I also unbolted the pulley carrier from the pulley. Do I need to get the carrier off first somehow? I see two circlips and a bearing in the parts diagram, do I need to be concerned with those, or do they stay inside the pulley? Thanks in advance for your help? [​IMG]

    So, I just looked at it again this morning and somehow the pulley carrier came right off? The grease inside was pretty filthy, and I was spinning the pulley independent of the cam last night, but didn't try to pull off carrier again until today. It appears the cir clip is gonna need to come off after all. Hopefully this helps the fellow 83' QV owners, as this pulley needs to come off to get the cams out to do the major.

    My roll pin fell out and the pulley was just intermittently spinning once this happened. It was making a noise and that's how I found out the pin fell out. I remove the belt and could not get that pulley to come off. So instead I installed another roll pin and left it all stock they way an '83 should be.

    I read that thread, and now that I have it mostly apart, it's design makes a lot more sense. I'm pretty sure the roll pin that fell out in yours is supposed to be a roll pin. The "shear pin" is the shaft the pulley carrier is pinned to. Then there is a bearing on the actual cam (and pulley) so when the air pump seizes and the shear shaft breaks, the pulley can spin freely on the cam. Clever design, but maybe it doesn't work as well as intended? Multiple people have told me remove the belt, so as to avoid grenading the motor if the air pump seizes, but in theory this shear shaft should protect the motor of that happens.

    My intention is to put it back on after i change all the cam seals etc. I just can't get the cam out with that pulley still attached, as the end plate that sits between the head and pulley has studs that I can not clear with the pulley on.

    To update from this morning, I removed the cir clip, but the bearing seams to be pressed on as well. I have to use a puller and was not satisfied with the one I have. Will have to see if can modify, or else I'm ordering another one :)

    An update for my 83' QV crew, just in case you guys want to replace the seal on the end of the cam where the air pump pulley is :)

    I thought it was going to be pain to remove the pulley as the cam shaft is hollow, and I could not easily find a step adapter to fit in the end for the puller to brace against. It's a pretty small shaft, 12mm Id, 20mm od, (~1/2"id 3/4"od) and the smallest adapter I could find was 3/4"id 1"od. I had a moment though, and figured out I could just make a step adapter with an Allen head bolt and some washers that I had laying around. Worked like a champ, and pulley came right off. Now I can actually start swapping out valve shims and replacing seals and put it back together, sweet!

    I got a better pic to show the shear shaft also. You can see the really narrow portion toward the pulley carrier.
