My brother was driving my 91 Testarossa today and had what seems to be a major problem. The car runs like new as it did today when he took it out. He first went to the Shell station and filled the tank (aprox. 10 gals.) with 91 octane gas and took off down the freeway. Drove about 15 miles at 70 mph and took off ramp to turn around. While at stop sign car started to run rough, even died once. Was able to get back on freeway to limp it home, car wouldn,t go much faster than 50 mph. All of the gages showed no problems. When getting back to town he said at near stop the car seems to be "poping" almost like a small back fire. After he got home he called me out of town and I went home to check the car. The car had completley cooled and I took it out, it seems much quieter than normal and barely would accelerate. Also very jerky. By the way he said a couple of time while going 50 mph the 7-12 slow down light came on. When I parked the car I raised the hood and could smell what smelled like oil burning and a light smoke was coming up on the right side just above the exhaust. After the smoke was gone I stuck my hand down there and it was alot hotter than sticking my hand in the same location on the left side. Could it be bad gas or something much worse? Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in Advance!!!

The slow down light is an indication of an overheated cat. Your noticing the heat and smoke would seem to confirm that.

If it is running that badly do not run the car, no good can come of it. It needs to be diagnosed to find the problem before it gets worse and more expensive.

Sounds like a lack of ignition on one bank of the engine. Heat is from the cats getting very hot reacting the unburned fuel.

Tow the car in- driving it without fixing it is a good way to burn it down. Plenty of pictures of this occouring.

It's been about two weeks....did you find the problem? Could be as simple as a dead O2 (lamda) sensor. By the way, there is a water temp sensor on the top of the motor that when it dies, it cuts out one bank of the motor. Costs about $68 and very easy to get to. Carry a spare and don't let someone talk you into a new ignition system or new computer. Bothers are kinda hard on cars at times.

Thanks for checking! Took the car to Brian Crall in San Ramon. Turns out an Igintion coil went bad causing some cat problems. Brian's doing repairs and I should have car back in a day or two. Thank God for Fchat or I would never have found Brian. I can't count the bad mechanics I've met in my life, it's nice to finally find a good one. Thanks again for following up on my problem. Maybe we'll meet up sometime, lunch is on me.....Charlie
