I'm going to propose marriage to my girlfriend on Friday. It won't be a surprise that I ask, but I'd like the moment to be a surprise.

We'll be driving from San Angelo to College Station Friday evening to start a week long road trip.

The timing puts us in or around Austin about sunset. Any ideas for a spot to pull over and whip it out? The ring, I mean. Get your mind out of the gutter.

I will not entertain any suggestions regarding a proposal in College Station. That is not gonna happen. Nuh uh. Guns Up.

Maybe the Oasis?! They call themselves the sunset capital of Texas. Just cheesy enough for me!! Plus with all the water filling the lake, it might not be super sad. But it will probably be packed.

Just be sure the place has a "BYOCJ" policy that's friendly to your plan...

Congrats on the proposal and good luck!

The Oasis, Mt. Bonnell (great view over the river), the Capital (should still be open then), the Stephen F. Austin, Driskill, or W downtown, or spend the night at the Barton Creek Resort and do it there.

Just a few decent places... OR do it later that night at the Broken Spoke (Dale Watson is playing on Friday!), Ginny's Little Longhorn, The Continental Club, or the outside bar at the Hotel San Jose. All of these would have an element of style to them.

    Have fun!

I just got off the phone with a new friend at COTA. The tower might be an option. As awesome as that could be, it could also be terrifying if the weather is bad. Seems like bad juju to do this in the rain.

In fact, if the weather is bad, I'll wait till sunshine, and keep it in my pocket all week if I have to. I'm talking about the ring you sick bastids.

Mt Bonnell looks like a neat place to check out, if not now, then some other time.

I have to be in Aggieland on Saturday morning for a green flag at Texas World Speedway. But we do have another night in Austin later in the week so those suggestions are great.

Congress bridge? Since your doing something batty, it seems appropriate...

Congrats man! We went to Austin and that is where I proposed a couple of years ago. I'll never forget how incredibly nervous I was. When we go (we are there a lot) we spend most our time on S. Congress so we cross the bridge every time. I proposed on the bridge during sunset. Just make sure you are on the south side or you will be swarmed with everyone watching the bats. Have fun!!!

First and most importantly, congratulations. As my wife will attest, I am not Mr. Romantic, so I can/should not offer any advice on popping the big question. I can, however, recommend getting hitched in Vegas. Best decision my we ever made. We were not as financially blessed then as we are now, and it was easy and inexpensive. The money we saved went toward the down payment on our first house. Plus, the wife hit a royal flush on a nickel slot machine @ Harrah's, which just about paid for the whole ceremony. :)
Seriously, I wish you many happy years of wedded bliss...T
