I ''assume'' that this is normal... but I have the stock mufflers on my 348ts, and everytime I come back from a drive, my mufflers and/or cat's sound like a REALLY loud bowl of Rice Krispies!! They snap, krackle, and pop for a good 5 minutes after I turn off the motor... is this normal??

The reason I ask is, when I bought the car, the exhaust ECU's are both disabled & unplugged. The mechanic that has maintained the car for the last 12 years insists that I shouldn't worry about it. I guess prior to that (2 years ago), the ECU's were giving constant false slow-down warnings.
He says (and I agree) that if the engine is misfiring, or a cylinder or bank goes dead, i'll know it... which is the only situation that SHOULD cause the cat's to overheat. None-the-less, i'm still mildly paranoid that the exhaust may overheat and I wont know it... even though the car may be running perfectly. I would also appreciate your thoughts on this.

Doesnt sound normal to me. After a run when I switch off my car after a run there is no sound at all from the cats or exhaust.

That sound is in any car...However it should not be "REALLY LOUD" are you exagerating? Is there anything you could compare the volume of the sound to by chance?

My old Corvette would sound like a shop full of elves hammering away when I would shut it off. Tinker. Ting.

Ting, ting ting, Ting, TING. Pop. Crackle. Ting.

Would go on for 5 or 10 minutes after shutdown.

My 348 after a hot run does it for about a minute. You couldn't kill that old Vette with a Colt .45, so I suspect that our 348's will be fine, too.

You won't notice missing 1 cylinder, especially if it is an intermittent miss. Connect up the exhaust ECUs. Fire is no laughing matter. If there is a false SLOW DOWN alarm then fix the problem rather than leaving the safety-net uninstalled.

Sorry, I need to get my ears examined. There is a pinging sound in my car but it is not that loud compared to my Audi which is much louder.

well, the sound is not deafening or anything... but every car ive ever seen has some sort of muffler, and this is louder than any other car ive ever heared! Most cars will make some sort of metal ''cool down'' crackle, but this car seems much louder and more obvious than others. My Miata is turbocharged, it makes alot of heat... when I shut it down after a hard run, you'll hear some tings and pings from under the hood... but ive never heared any ear-catching crackle from the exhaust.
Maybe this car is different since there is no pipes? because there is'nt much of an exhaust system like on most cars, it runs bit hotter?

My Rachel's (the car) family doctor, EUGENIO, told me the very same thing. We don't fool around with the possibility of a fire. Find and fix the problem-------there is one--------and it can be fixed.

Between the mix of parts with names like ECUs, 02 sensors and really touchy coils, it can make one a bit stressed. Trust me (why:)-------take it one step at a time, either in your own garage or with your favorite Ferrari guru. When these gremlins are chased away---------it doesn't take long to feel free of anxiety, to enjoy once again, the sound and power of that wonderful 348 engine.

God, I'm so turned on that I think I'll sip the last of this red wine in my driver's seat of Rachel-----------

    Cheers, Hank

I have to say, I couldn't be happier I spent the money on hyperflows and new 02 Sensors. I get no such noise when turning the car off, I know my engine management software is working up to speed, my idle is pretty rock solid. I also don't have to worry about damaged cats fouling the engine after having spent so many $$ on the 30K and replacing leaky valves.

I'd try to fix this issue properly.
