The "Second World War" is an autobiography, primarily of the pre-war and war years. It provides a unique perspective from his place at this turning point in history.

There is a multi-volume (7?) bio by his son of his life, which is probably out of print and biased, but could be found in most libraries.

One of the better and more objective (has the benefit of time and scholarship) bios is by William Manchester titled "The Last Lion", but so far the 2 volumes only go up to 1940. I think Manchester intends (intended?) to write more, but perhaps found the war years daunting.

Probably one of the better single-volume bios is by Martin Gilbert titled "Churchill: A Life". It is somewhat lengthy, even in a single volume; the problem is anything shorter doesn't do justice to his life - he just was involved in so much.

Read them all. Couldn't have said it better. Another of his tomes is "A History of the English Speaking Peoples", a four volume set.

Also found a great little book called "The Irrepressible Churchill' - "Through His Own Words and the Eyes of His Contemporaries."

You have to be a real Churchill-wonk to read them all :). But there is some truth to the suggestion, he was a complex man. Churchill was also a prolific writer and his two favorite topics were himself and English history.

Bump a thread from a long time ago.

I want to read the Last Lion.
I'm more interested in the 1930s.
Should I start with the first book in the series, or dive right into the third?

    Thanks!

    Matt
