Well, I thought I had the 348 starting well, but ocassionaly it just clicks. If you wait awhile or boost it with a charger it hits. I just took the 700 amp battery and had it tested. Tests perfect. I checked all cableing and connections, all good. I took the starter apart a few weeks ago and re-sanded the contacts, but I think it really needs a new plunger and contacts for the solenoid. Does anyone have a part cross ref or a source for the contacts and plunger? I have a Denso 128000-8181 starter.

    Thanks,
    Dave

I found a rebuild kit on ebay. I think Ricambi has them. Also, try GT Car Parts in Phoenix.

Take the parts down to your local auto-elec and match them up. :):)

Before spending any money on starter parts, I would recommend testing the voltage reading at the solenoid, at both of the two wire terminals. If you aren't getting full battery voltage to the starter, it won't crank over.

The main positive battery cable should give full voltage directly to the starter motor.

The signal from the ignition switch also MUST read the same as the battery voltage. If you have a voltage drop through the ignition circuit, even a brand new starter won't kick over. Common problem, not too difficult to correct at minimal cost.

    Thanks,

I actually have a voltmeter under the driver's seat awaiting a no-start condition so I can measure what is going on when it won't start, problem is by the time I grab someone to turn the key the stupid thing hits every time-pretty frustrating... I checked it when it does start an I get about 2V drop from the actual battery voltage while cranking.

It would be my opinion, based on your voltage drop, that your starting problem is just going to get worse as time goes on. I know of numerous 348's (and other Ferraris) that have had the same problem, including my own.

For a while I ran my 348 with a remote starter button installed in the position of the cigarette lighter. It worked 100% of the time. I eventually installed a bypass relay behind the interior fuse panel, and it has worked 100% of the time since I installed it (there is a thread in the archives that shows my installation). It's my understanding that this is an approved fix via Ferrari NA, and it's totally out of sight and totally reversible, and cost about $20 for the relay.

No matter how good your starter is, and how good your battery and cables are, if you aren't getting full voltage to the starter it isn't going to operate reliably.

How many miles on your car. Tests perfect leaves a lot up in the air. The starters are pretty bullet proof and you can tell visually from the contacts in the starter whether they need to be replaced or not. It's very common for the contacts not to be leveled properly causing problems. Do me a favor and test the rest voltage on the battery after it has sat for a few hours. 12.2 or under and your battery may not be up to snuff. Unless they used a load tester on the battery then the test is moot.

The battery was tested under load. I am begining to think it may by what Jeff is referring to. I may make me up a quicky button to bridge between the starter hot and the solenoid tang, that way I can quickly hit it in the back if the thing fails to start. If it starts I will make up the relay circuit to get the load off the ignition switch. I had the starter apart a few weeks ago and sanded the contacts - and leveled the contacts to make sure both were getting hit with the disk equally, that didn't seem to help. Battery is ~ 12.5 now after sitting a couple of days.

    No on rebuild parts from
    Ricambi,
    FerrParts,
    GT Car parts,
    T Rutlands.

They only sell the whole rebuilt unit with an exchange.

There was a thread on here about disassemblying the starter/solenoid with lots of pictures.
I thought I bookmarked it, but I lost it and I've searched all through the archives and can't find it. Does somebody have the link please?

    It's tomorrow's project.
    Thanks.

Awesome video link. My car just started doing this before I put it away.

Does anyone know what kit us 355 guys need to order?

I just pulled the starter. This was an easy job.
THe plunger & contacts are pitted fairly evenly over the contact areas.
For now, I just wire buffed the contacts & plunger clean & she started right up.

I'll be looking for the 125mm plunger. Most of my local autoparts stores dont car parts for the starter.

    BTW: for my '95 it's

I ordered the parts from Amazon (Plunger & contacts) for like $17 in June 2014. They are now $12.
The other day, the starter stuck again. So cleaning the contacts lasted over two years.
Anyway, decided it was time to stop messing around. Pulled the starter & put the new contacts & plunger in. Cake. I LOVE these easy jobs. :)

Thought I'd update. Since my starter started doing nothing when the key turned, I decided to rebuild it after 5 years.
I had a spare plunger & contacts, but like to have one in spares. My original link went from $12 to now $35 (Amazon. Did somebody inform them this fits a Ferrari & they applied the Ferrari tax??? ;) )
I found the individual part #s, and ordered a kit (same as above - plunger, 2 contacts) for $10
(the one I pulled wasn't really that badly pitted)

    Nippondenso 1.2kW,1.4kW OSGR OSGR Starter
    for my '95 355: Nippon Denso 228000-3140
I think the Denso kit # is x000JIY2MV (might be 3rd party #)

    Kit 79-92550
    Plunger Denso #053660-7150, 053660-7151
    one contact : 053513-0241
    other contact: 053513-7080

This is the longer plunger. It arrived today & matches to my current collection.
