I am looking for a camera for the family. I was considering the Nikon D40 but it is a little bulky. I want to have the ability to put the camera in my wife's purse. I did get an opportunity to go to Ritz Cameral and see both the Nikon D40, Nikon P80 and Canon G9. I think that after seeing how large the SLR are, we will be looking for a point and shoot with video. I did a quick search and found the following:

    Digital Camera Info
    - Rankings per july 27 '08
    1) Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18 - 18x ($290)
    2) Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H7 Digital - 15x ($330)
    3) Canon G9 - 6x ($430)

    Nikon P80 - 18x ($399) - not ranked

we stopped at a camera store today to buy the Canon G9 BUT they were out of them. While we were there we saw a nikon P80 which was very comfortable to hold and light. We are really not techi and just want a decent camera.

    I would appreciate your thoughts.

The Cybershots are great "general use" cameras and can take some really good pictures. If you have pshop you can adjust the saturation, which Sony's seem to always lack.

I would say my fave so far is the discontinued (but on ebay) v570 kodak. it had a dual lens, one was a great wide angle, it had no protruding lens to get bent, and it took fantastic photos atop the Empire State Buliding close to 20 degrees on a cold January morning.

The Kodak Easyshare V or M series are actually pretty darned good for the price and I think the Sony's are a bit overpriced. The Panasonics are based on the Leica series, but neither the uber expensive Leica, nor the down market Panasonic live up to that reputation. I have been bitten by advertiser driven review sites that only look at "the best of now" not taking in to consideration better cameras that came before.
