Here's the scenerio. I am interviewing for a job with 2 different companies. I'll call them company A and company B.

I will be doing my last interview with company A next Tuesday. They have strongly hinted that they will offer me the job.

I will be doing my next to last interview with Company B on Monday the day before I interview with company A. Company B has also hinted of a job offer.

I prefer to work for company B.

Here's my question: How do I inform company B that I will be receiving a job offer from a different company without ruining my chances with company B? I am concerned that if I bring up the subject of a job offer from another company that company B will either lose interest or think that I am arrogant in trying to force them into hurrying up their hiring process. Is there any way to bring up this subject without "burning my bridges" with company B?

Put a positive spin on this! What you have going for you is that company A is your last interview. If B offers you a job, you are 'locked' and advising them that you need a day because you have another interview in being honest. No company will pass on a good prospective employee when honesty is shown. Knowing this, company A may sweeten the pot to get you to sign on during your interview. At that point, take the job and keep your interview with company A. It's all poker. Be cool and play it well!

Why even mention the other interview?

The companies aren't going to tell you anything about the other candidates. You need to watch out for yourself and make sure that you don't give either company a reason to move on to the next candidate.

Until you have a job offer in hand, do not assume there will be one. In that same vein, if you need a job, don't pass on one hoping that the other company will eventually come through.

Of course, this is all from the perspective of an IT guy, where we get to deal with the scummiest of the scumbag headhunters.

Jeff. IMHO dont play the game.

If I'm interviewing someone for a position (and I've got the experience with a large corporation doing this), I want to know that this person wants this position. If I get a hint that the person has other possible motives, well, then why would I waste time to hire them. In the grand scheme of things, no individual is that valuable, and, there is another out there waiting for a job............

Goto the place that you WANT to work for and hire with them.

If you're going after a large corporation, well, then my advice would be well taken, if not, then it may not. Smaller companies can tolerate that stuff and its not professional.

    Good Luck with your choice,
    Bob

Thanks for the answers. I'll keep my mouth closed and see which company actually offers me the job.

I own a staffing company and i will tell you the best thing you can do is tell them. Be honest, tell them the company, the salary ect.. if you just tell them your getting another offer, yes they will think your playing a game. The more info you give them, two things will happen. One, they will know your honest and your in demand, two, if they can they will come in over the other companies offer and hurry the process up, none of which are bad things.
