I have the 328 workshop manual, but under the torque values it doesn't list the torque values for the camshaft caps. It does list the valve cover value at .9, but what is .9? It looks as if it is Nm. That converts to just under 8 in - lb.

    Help!

The cam cap studs are 6 x 1, their torque spec (6.5 ft-lb/ 0.9 Kg-m) is the same as the cam cover nuts & other 6x1 fasteners.

Ferrari is generally very cosistent about using the same torque spec for the same thread diameter - pitch fasteners.

FYI on my last belt change a few years back I replaced the acorn nuts on the cam covers with SS nyloc nuts (aircraft type) and torqued to 10 ft lbs. So haven't touched them and no leaks.

Thanks for the tip. I'll see if my local supply house carries these nuts.

If the local supply house doesn't have them, try McMasterCar, If they don't have it, you probably don't need it.

the torque value isn't for the nut but the stud, bolt or screw. as you tighten you stretch the fastner. go to far and it'll shear or in the case of studs it can pull out of the aluminium.

the fastner needs stretch to keep the right tension or it will loosen over time. also the oil or grease on the fastener will affect the torque value, causing to much or to little to be used.

smg2 has it right, the torque is to apply tension to the fastener by either stretching it as he describes, or by compressing some form of lock washer, be it a wave washer, classic split ring lock washer, or belleville(sp?) conical spring washer like the cam cover washers.

The cam cover nut torque s/b 6.5 ft-lb, That's plenty to fully compress the beleville washers. Torquing higher is risking pulling the cam cover studs out of the head.

Nylock nuts are usually used with little or no torque as the nylon insert resists the nut vibrating loose.

My car has nylock nuts on my cam covers with brass washers under them. I torque to 6.5 ft-lbs, then go back several days later & re-torque to ensure that any sealant flow has stopped. After the 2nd re-torque I have never had any loosten up.
