I was told by my mechanic that there was a oil leak in my front left brake so he looked into the ATE caliper and found that there was a crack in the 'cylinder' (I don't know whether I use the correct technical term).
Can it be repaired? If not then where can I get a replacement?

He could mean the "piston"? I'll defer to some of the other more senior folks here, a 512TR uses either TEVES or Brembo calipers. In both cases, I don't think the piston can be purchased as a distinct item.

Did he perhaps mean master cylinder, or brake booster?

We need more info. By "oil" I assume you mean brake fluid. If "cylinder" refers to the master cylinder, then the fix is easy and relatively cheap. Open the front bonnet and pull back the top carpet (held by velcro) covering the master cylinder. Look in there for brake fluid leaks (should be obvious). If "cylinder" refers to one of the pistons, well... you don't want to know.

Yes I think he meant brake piston inside the 'ATE' caliper and it was brake fluid that leaked on to the front left wheel. So can this piston be purchased seperately or do I need to replace the whole 'ATE' caliper?

Three (at least) things can go wrong that will cause a leak at the wheel end of the brake system- the caliper can break or develop a crack, the piston that presses the pad against the disc can crack, or the seal between the caliper and the piston can develop a leak. Only the first problem is expensive, relatively, the others are pretty simple to solve and not costly.

The internals of the ATE calipers are the same as some early 80's Pre ABS BMW 6 and 7 series (but not the actual caliper body) then give euro car parts a call to see if they can match up a seal kit and piston (www.eurocarparts.com)

As per this problem then would it be better if I upgrade my front brakes to 550 or 575 systems?
