I have a couple of pet projects I'm thinking of starting but wonder if any you guys have any experience in the following:

How do you take the wheels off of Mattel and Autoart 1/18 models without breaking the stub axles etc

Any advice would be gratefully received.

It all depends on what model we're talking about. On some models there are tiny screws, on some models the axles break and on some models the wheels snap off. The later models are easier to take the wheels off. When I did the MC12 conversion I was amazed that after the mod the new wheels still turn, whereas in the past with e.g. a 360 I had to glue the new wheels in place. Not uncommon even when you look at the work pros do.

    Thanks Tifosi12,

I'm looking at removing the wheels from a Mattel F40 to replace them with the Autograph 1/18 wheel transkit, and also an Autoart Diablo GTR.

I don't want to break anything!

I wanted rims that look more like the originals and I wanted slicks: 360 Challenge car wheels

PS: I don't have a Mattel F40. But from a Bburago F40 they come right off given enough force. They're only stuck on a straight pin axle.

Wow - great job - the wheels look much more realistic being that bit smaller. You're obviously a very skilled modeller. Thanks for your input - I'll use you as my inspiration!

Thanks, that's very kind. I wouldn't call myself skilled, rather experienced. When you do this long enough you're bound to learn a few tricks along the way.

Speaking of inspiration: As a kid I always marveled at the Tamyia catalogue with all the war dioramas and was stunned how realistically built those were. I've done a few war dioramas myself over the years but never achieved anything close to that level. But that doesn't mean it isn't fun trying.
    :)
