Netflix or Blockbuster: how do you prefer to rent DVDs?

  1. Blockbuster: walking into a real store is best

  2. Blockbuster: online + store is the full deal

  3. Netflix: queue them up, mail them back

  4. Buy them: renting is for losers

So, after months of the kids behind the Blockbuster counter explaining to me how I could save on my monthly fees by switching to their online service, I finally decided to save money and switch to Netflix.

So far, I'm impressed. Having a queue of flicks picked out is easier than wandering into the Blockbuster store, waiting in line, and getting whatever's left over.

Anyone else have opinions on this?

We love Netflix. I've watched almost the entire series of Sopranos already with it.
The turn around time isn't bad either really, contrary to Blockbusters commercials. Most of the time it's 2 days, sometimes 3.

Netflix baby! we've been doing this for 5~6yrs I think now. I love the dig by Blockbuster about waiting, like i stand at the mailbox all day! I'm lucky if I can watch TV at least 3 times a week! with only 1 movie night a week, the turn around time is a non issue. besides I hate retail and loath to spend anytime waiting in line, another reason the internet is great.

If you're close to a store then the BB option would be nice. Not sure if you have the option of picking up at store and returning mail and vice versa? If you do then it would seem like BB is better for last minute viewing decisions.

I've joined Netflix twice and BB online twice. It seems I have time to sit and watch two or three movies maybe one weekend out of six if I'm lucky, so once I got past the freebies I was just wasting my money.

I have a BB store five mins from my house, so it's easier to just go there on a Tuesday evening, rent what I want, make a 'backup' and watch it when I get around to it. I have a stack of movies I haven't seen yet.

I've been using netflix with no real complaints.

I am thinking of going to BB b/c I have two stores near me. I like that I can just go there and switch things out.

I was told a while back that if you take the red tear off things from the netflix envelope and bring them to blockbuster you will get a free movie for each one. I haven't tried it yet. I've got a stack of them, I should try.

I use Blockbuster. I sometimes rent online or go to the store which is like five minutes away from my house. I also buy some PPV on DirecTV!

I have heard many good things about the Netflix service... however I could never see myself using it because I don't plan ahead for watching a movie at home. With me it's always a spontaneous "Hey let's go grab a movie" and then making an evening of it. With Netflix I think I would feel like I was obligated to be sitting around watching a lot of movies, which I don't do. I guess it just depends on the person.

I just drop by the video store every now and then and pick up the 4 for $20 ex-rental DVDs. I'm usually so far behind that I'll find lots of former blockbusters there I haven't seen.

I use blockbusteronline. I have a store about two miles from me so being able to bring their online movies into the store and exchange them for a movie is nice.

i rarely rent, but when i do, i prefer to go to a store and get one (it doesn't hurt that theres a bb right by my house) i've been looking into netflix, but since bb offers the same service w/in store options also, i think i'll start looking into that as well.

Don't you ever want to see a movie that may be good, may be average, just for the hell of it?

I only buy ones that I really liked.

Anyway, I'm doing the 4-at-a-time thing with Netflix and you can keep them as long as you want. So far, it's OK.

In a past life, I wrote news briefings for TCI before it became Comcast. I basically summarized news so employees didn't have to read all the trade journals or dailys. I became pretty versed in the telecom industry. Anyway, at that time the mormon church was a major shareholder in Viacom which owns Blockbuster. Blockbuster (Viacom) would routinely edit movies and remove content which didn't meet shareholder values.

For example, American Pie-Unrated Version is edited before it hits the Blockbuster shelves. It is for this reason I don't shop at Blockbuster. I've used Netflix for several years and couldn't be happier.

With movies as cheap as they are now, I'd rather buy. I picked up a copy of Goodfellas widscreen for $5 the other day. Not a bad find.

I buy 'em new and used - a few days ago I got 12 for 28 bucks. 8 @ 3 bucks a pop, 4 for a buck each. Those were used, of course, but, come with a lifetime guarantee (Movie Gallery).

Same goes for new movies - deals are out there if you snatch 'em up. For instance, picked up a 6 film Steve McQueen box set for 40 smackers, wait, no... 30 at Christmas.

Between new and used, I've picked up @100 movies in last 2 years. Ridiculous how many we waxers haven't watched yet. In fact... *picks out "Vacation" purchased 1 1/3 years ago... puts in DVD player...*

    No reason to rent.

So, PAPster, should we be more curious about the 80% that you buy or the ones you rent??;)
