I'll be celebrating my 20th birthday this summer, in August to be exact. Over those three to four months away from classes, I'm looking for something to do. Preferably something interesting that centers on my main interest, that being automobiles. Many of the senior members on the board have beautiful, ridiculously gorgeous auto's and moto's and while I can't say these amenities will not be a part of my later adult life, I can say for sure that unless I win the lottery or some crazy situation comes about, I won't be anywhere near a Lamb or *sigh* an F-car for a long time.
This is where my crazy idea comes into play. I would never expect anyone to help me out with something like this, but the truth is, it would be the single best thing to occur in my life in QUITE some time. I'm proposing, more or less, an unpaid automobile internship for a week or a few weeks during the summer. Basically someone with the knowledge, will to teach a small amount, and the same enthusiasm about motoring that I have. I have never had a chance to be up close and personal with, or heaven-forbid take a ride in, a, "supercar," or anything that could be construed as one. I guess the thing I can say is, if you had the same passion about cars as I do now, you would be doing the same thing I am now, however ridiculous it may sound. I would do anything (no jokes please) to hang out with someone who was willing to show me their cars, inform me about them, MAYBE take me for ride or just let me sit in one.

I'm only 19, I'm not a senior member here, I don't pay and subscribe, but I love cars the same, if not more than every single person on here. Where there's a will there's a way and I plan on doing all I can to succeed and own something worthy of a picture on this website.

oh yeah, I'll fly anywhere. anywhere.

I can't imagine that your "I will eat feces to drive your car for a day. " has anything to to do with the response.

Seriously though.... stick around here and read more than you post, act like a normal person and maybe get started in the local scene.

first off, nobody knows anything about you. Fill out your profile. Also, try to get to know people in your area. Post more in your regional area. Go to some meets. Maybe someone there will give you a ride.

What a thrill it was mediating between you and Bruce...... It's rather amusing to consider how various personalities have changed over the years. Carbon would probably get the axe nowdays.

You might have better luck if you just call the exotic dealers/exotic repair shops and talk to them directly.

Then, you should 1) subscribe, 2) get involved with the Chicago area Ferrari folk -- they have their own section here and 3) Go buy this 308 GT4. GT4s will never be cheaper than they are now.

I joke as much as anyone does. I guess that's what I have to say on that.

I guess what I'm saying is there is no risk in someone from the Chicago area saying, sure, meet me some sunday/saturday and we can talk for a little bit.

    Lots of good advice.

Must admit, when I read your 1st post I thought WTF. This guy wants to start at the top... nice idea if you can swing it, but time for a dose of reality.

Your second post, IMO, comes off with a tad of an attitude...

If you are serious, take the advice offered. Be reasonably polite and respectful... and you will likely be surprised. Expect the world to come to you... and you are going to be waiting a while.

    Just my $0.02.

I've tried various other times to get convo's rolling on here dealing with sports and it seems each time after I post, no one says a thing for some time...
...Chicago regional section (bears are trying to kill me)

no one has anything to say sports wise?

I would never come on any site and give anyone attitude, I don't really understand why I am catching any flak from anyone...I'm trying to cut through the bull**** and talk cars and apparently no one seems to want to do that. I'm not reserved, I love talking to anyone who loves talking cars or sports, and I'm a younger guy. If I don't come off how some of you guys think I should come off, I don't apologize, it's just not how I am. I would never mean to come off as a young punk who wants something for nothing, I really do hope that this is indeed not the case.

What can a guy do? I'll try my best to come to a meet in Chicago this summer, I guess that's all I can hope for.

    I agree.

People won't just meet with you without knowing who you are. I know we won't especially this time, after my mom had been stalked.

some of this stuff takes time, and it seems like you aren't patient enough. Just relax, and go with the flow. Go to an chicago meet in the spring, and meet the people you have interacted with or have seen on this board in person.

you know, i recently joined my local chapter of the fca. before then, i'd go to local shows, but never got to know anyone or meet any of the owners really. however, over about the past 6 months, i've gotten to meet quite a few interesting people, not just with ferrari's, but other brands as well. it never hurts to get your name out there, just try meeting people first.

    Hey Adam,

I feel your pain, but be patient. I'm young too (22) and live in a country where supercars and exotics are rare as hell - I know how strong the craving can be, trust me. I've thought about making posts like yours to be honest, but always, in the end, thought that even the most polite form of asking would be quite rude. You might want to make it all nice and kind but in the end it'll probably be read as some young guy trying to fix himself up with a ride.

Stick around though... Ferrarichat has given me opportunities I once thought would never happen. 2006 was a dream come true. And I didn't ask anyone for that - these were all offers I was very thankful to get. Got a chance to attend a Pininfarina cocktail party at the Paris Auto Show where the P4/5 had its european debut - all thanks to James Glickenhaus. It was also the first Ferrari I sat in my life (ok, I'll be honest - that I asked Jim for)!! How about that eh? Something to tell the grandchildren one day (hope one of them will be a boy :p) Then in December I got the first Ferrari ride in my life - again from an fchat member. PoleApart and his beautiful 328GTS - I was overwhelmed with the experience and wore a HUGE smile on my face for the rest of the day (to the extent of people looking strangely at me). I'm even more so thankful to Przemek (owner) as we had exchanged maybe 3 PMs prior to that and he had been some 7h on the road, on his way from Germany to home in Warsaw (were I bet the family was waiting, anxious like hell)...

So trust me... living in the USA I'm sure it'll all work out fine for you. Just be cool about it, don't rush and be desperate.

If you want something from people, you have to invest in those people. You need to spend a little time face to face. This is both a low-risk, hide behind the scenes chat forum for the fun stuff but there are a lot of reserved owners on the site and Internet Joe #94334832 chiming in doesn't get you very far these days. That can be hard to stomach because you're young and you've had over-the-computer networking and connectivity since you were a kid.

You said it yourself. It was a longshot. I guarantee you though, if you showed up to some local club meets spent some time face to face, introducing yourself to people (a lot harder to do in person than on some message forum!) you'll quickly make a lot of friends and what you're looking for would no doubt "click".

So that's why you're catching flack. You have to be a little more invested than 71 posts on FerrariChat.

    Hey Adam,

As a young enthusiast myself (23 years old, I joined when I was 20), I would like to add some advice. As has been already stated, going to meets is a great way to start. Scott (rollsorferrari?) had a great idea of joining the local FCA or Lambo club chapter (I'm not sure if there is one in Chicago, although I'd assume there is). Another good way to get to know people is by going to F1 watching parties. I initially met FarmerDave and a couple of other Dallas-area F-chatters by going to one of these parties. I wasn't all that interested in F1 racing (gasp), but the thought of hanging out people who had a passion for exotic cars overrode my lack of interest in F1. Since that time, I have not only developed an interest in F1 racing, but also made invaluable contacts throughout the automotive and exotic car world.

This goes without saying, but be friendly, be patient, be polite, and most of all, smile. It will take time. You never know what contacts you will make in the next few months. Oh....and happy EARLY birthday!! :D
