So since the age of 10-12 years old I've always wanted a 911 or Ferrari (preferably the latter).

Fast forward to 2024: my old ass (44) but still the 12 year old brain, can make that happen.

I've spend a lot of time trying to figure out which car, reliability, expected costs, resale, etc... to see if this makes sense (or maybe to sell it o the wife).

So I've landed on the F430. Reasonable in terms of price, maintenance, performance and won't take a huge lick when if I resale it.

One of the pieces of the puzzle was where to maintain, repair the car. anyway, found a badass local, and super qualified shop locally (I'm in TN).

Went I talk to their exotic guy. Dude is super legit and super knowledgeable. Super nice too and spends a ton of time chatting to me, then ask me about how I came to this decision.

After our long chat, he's like:
    -you ever drove one?
    -no....
    -Never meet your heroes
-oh ****, wait. You're right. I never drove one!
-they're not what you think. At least drive one
-Good point. I will. Hell you know so much more than I do, and you've messed with everything: porsche, audi, ferrari, lambos, even Maclaren

So I walk away like, damn... maybe it's not this dream car I've been obsessing over for like decades!

So I test drove one today: ****!!!! It was everything I dreamed of and more!!! Literally like giving Crack to a crackhead!!!

I see why this community is so big and so tight. Great cars!!!! Amazing cars!!!

I'll now even more excited about hunt for my f430!!!!

Get it man and stop putting so much thought into it. Go with feelings, not your logical mind. You’ll die soon like the rest of us… if it doesn’t work out for whatever reason, just sell it. Big deal. It’s not a life long decision. I’ve had 2 F430’s and had them for 11 years… were great cars. And I also just got a 23. Carrera T a few weeks ago to go with my F8. Also great cars…. Just do it and enjoy it. The last thing you ever want is if you get sick or near death, to say, gee I wish I got that Ferrari. Get it and get it fast! Like now. Good luck!

I wonder how common that scenario is. I had never driven, sat in or been close to a Ferrari until I took a one way flight, arrived at the dealer 15' before closing, signed the paper work and started a 1400 mile trip home.

Huge props to the salesman, it's hard to find people like that. Could've tried pitching a 144 month loan down your throat without even checking your credit score first.

Great story. I was 45 when I bought my 458 Spider. I tried to get my wife to talk me out of it, but she knew how much it meant to me. Ten seconds into driving it the deal was done. Zero regrets.

When comparing it objectively to modern day sports/supercars, a F430 is very underwhelming (especially if it's F1). But for the visceral driving experience, you can't really beat a Ferrari.
So don't worry about meeting your heroes, they are heroes for a reason. If we bought cars based on numbers, we would all have a R8, NSX or a damn GT-R.

    430 is super solid tbh

as far as never meet your hero goes, I know several people who were disappointed when they drove F40's which were the dream car of their youth (this was when they didn't cost millions)

I've been very fortunate to have now been in the Ferrari world for almost 40 years.... my first drive in a Ferrari at 16 years old. it was a glass 308 GTB.... at that time it was great ( My reference had been a Lotus Europa, and an Esprit.. ) it was way better. eventually, 15 years later I got to drive an Enzo-era car for the first time - I was underwhelmed, and shocked at how much work it was... but now I appreciate the differences.

Ferrari's are not "perfect". They were never meant to be. Perfection comes from compromise. You have to accept a few things if you own one.

What they are is "emotional". If they are not emotional then its possible to be disappointed when you finally meet your hero. You'll overlook the little things that annoy you.

A long time ago I tried selling them. People who never owned one would come in and some would scoff at this or that compared to Porsche or Mercedes or BMW or some Japanese brand.

I would tell them: "With Ferrari you don't pay for the AC and radio. You don't pay for the comfortable 6 way seats that look perfect after 100,000 miles. You don't pay for reliability. You don't pay for the paint quality.

You pay for three things: the style, the engine, and the Ferrari logo. And for that, they are a bargain."

Well said.,. Add the 4th thing as you mentioned though…. You’re paying for the emotion it gives you

Put it in Race and lift a little bit when you shift, the 430 driving experience is epic. Enjoy!
