If the current V8 doesn't sound like an American V8 to you then I don't know what to say. Clearly it can't be a long stroked version of the current motor. That would never do.

there is a slight similarity between a Maser V8 and an American V8 in terms of sound, but once they open throttle, the Maser still has a more distinctive sound.

I will disagree this once with the right honorable gentleman on a point of history:

Maserati - Burly manly V-8 - Think the mighty 450S (which has a similar nose to this car)
    :)

My perfect car would be a Maerati lightweight Granturismo with minimum frills and a 5 liter V-8 and a MANUAL six speed transmission.

I feel that we devotes of the real clutch pedal are being left out when it comes to this car. (as well as most other high performance cars)

I drove a 450S a couple of times! You can`t compare a car like this mighty old truck with a modern car! Also Maserati produced an ill-fated V12! In their 250F single seaters (chassis #2530 and 2532) and in their non-reliable 350S (#3503). So, there would be a historical link to the V12.

    Ciao!

    :)

OK then, what I'd REALLY like is this car about 15 - 20% smaller with 380+ hp straight dohc 4v six, manual transmission and clutch and...oh yeah, 2900 pounds on a full tank of gas.

oh by the way - does anyone know off the cuff how this car compares sizewise to a 612 Scaglietti?

The new GT is almost exactly the same size outside as the 612.

The new Coupe was at Goodwood and it is Fantastic in the metal. It was very nimble up the hill. I was going to drive it on one run but instead took my friend and Photographer Rodger Dixon up the Hill so he could snap away in P 4/5. I'll drive it soon and will report.

The Coupe will be at Pebble and I think they'll be giving drives to customers.
