I dont think that Mercedes could really bring back the 300sl..I mean it was such a special car. How can you recreat the past?

I agree with Dino, as nice as a modern interpretation of an old classic may sound there is a reason why production was ended. Certain cars left their mark on history because they had or didn't have certain things that made them appealing to buy in the first place. Leave the past in the past and stick to creating newer and more innovative products for future generations.

examples: Ford GT, Pontiac GTO, Dodge Charger, Shelby Mustangs, upcoming Camaro and Challenger...modern remakes but none are really anything else but a tribute to the past.

Only the cars that once were then can only be what they are today.

I agree with Dino too, although it would be nice to see a concept version.

I'm doubting this will happen, but they did "re-create" the SLR...

I don't want them to make it. I rode in a Gullwing just a few weeks ago and it was such a special and unique expierience, definetley not one that should try to be remade.

It might be made as a concept car to gauge interest.

I don't get you guys.... The only similarities are the name and the doors.... How can you even compare this to a shoddy lookalike par the new mustang, pontiac gto, charger, etc?

It's not like it's trying to look retro, it looks stunning.

I dont know what to think about the car. I think they should leave a very special car in their history alone and not try to recreate it. At the same time, I kinda hope they make it because it looks great.

I don't think they should bring back the past. But even if they do, i think it's even more ridiculous to slot this car in between SLK and SL, the orginial 300SL was close to top of the range Merc if i rembered correctly. Even if it wasnt, such an icon, if recreated, should go to the top of the Merc's line up. NOt mid table

I don't understand this whole 'don't bring back the past' bit. They aren't. That car looks nothing like the original gullwing, minus the doors and a vague reference to the little speed bumps over the tires. Mercedes definitely won't be trying to remake the driving experience of the original. I also highly doubt Mercedes would even call it a '300SL' seeing as it probably won't have a 3 liter engine. It looks awesome, it will probably be a stunning performer and driver if they make it, so what’s not to like?

The positioning of the car is journalist conjecture, based only on the photos. Don't put much faith in it until we get some more details from Mercedes.

I think that the world is going through a retro fad and everything movies, cars, clothes, and others are being rehashed. I am sure that we will outgrow it, however that does not change the fact that this car looks pretty cool. I am sure it will be nothing like the original 300SL and well, I really don't think that it will try to be, however I think it will be a unique experience all its own.

Or maybe even a one off, like what Napolis is doing right now with his "secret project". It could have SLR underpinnings, but with a great new shape and much much faster :D If it exists be glad that it does.

SPOT. ON. This is not a retro rehash, it is a modern interpretation, which is a great thing to do. It is the retro recreations that are the problem, when you do a simple remake you do a disservice to the original. When you carry on the spirit in the modern day you pay tribute.

I'm no fan of MB, but I love that pic and think this would be a great move for them!!

I was thinking the same thing!!

But either way, I think it looks very nice & the design isn't too outrageous.
