Hello Everyone...I just purchased a new flywheel that only has a mark for PM14 (TDC). Is this Normal? The flywheel also comes with paperwork that says that the mark is only a guide. Do they expect that a mechanic will etch in the other marks for TDC and all the other markings that came on an original 308gt4 flywheel. Also...the ring gear is of a non-replaceable type...is this also normal? The original ring gear can be replaced.

Any Help would be appreciated as I am not sure what to do at this point. I was trying to replace my flywheel and clutch this weekend and if I can not figure this out I will have have to wait till Monday and Call the flywheel distributor and my local ferrari dealer to get the answers.

    Thanks

Your situation doesn't surprise me (for a 20~30 year old car) -- there are so d*mn many (slightly) different 308 flywheel markings that, if I was a vendor making a new "run" of parts for the 308 market, I'd want to make only 1 version that could work on all 308 rather than having (and keeping track of) a lot of pre-stamped different versions -- just a guess. Is the supplier in the authorized F parts network or more of an F aftermarket supplier?

I'd agree that, if they are roughly the same price, I'd want one pre-marked for my version rather than the PM14 mark only -- perhaps TRutlands can explain.

I know that you want to get on with your project, but it might be worth checking with FerrariUK to see if they can supply a pre-marked one for your year/model/version -- how did/does the FerrariUK website price compare to what you paid?

Superfromance in the UK has a universal one that fits all including the QV cars and they want 900 plus international shipping. I paid about 930 plus US shipping. From the description they give it sounds like their flywheel probably does not have all the markings either.

The other issue is the ring gear. The one I have can not be replaced if a tooth chips.

Wouldn't surprise me if the Superformance and TRutlands part are from the same vendor -- there can't be that many companies making a living off of reproducing 308 flywheels ;).

Those prices are lower than the FerrariUK posted price of L866 for a US 308GT4 flywheel (but that might be for a 2-piece with the pre-marking).

I wouldn't be that concerned about the 1-piece vs 2-piece construction -- where are you going to get a new ring gear only anyway ;). Seriously, with the 1-piece design, I think the greater concern would be that the teeth won't be as hard as the teeth of a 2-piece flywheel (where the ring gear is a hard, but more brittle, alloy and the main body is a softer, but more ductile/tough alloy). Even if they didn't do any tooth surface hardening, if you used a 308 enough to wear the teeth off of the flywheel that would be a good thing IMO.

Thank u very much. Your comments have been very helpful. I am still going to call my local ferrari dealership and see what type of flywheel they sell. I got a price from them of 1100.oo usd compared to trutlands 930-940.oo usd.

I contacted TRutlands and they told me that they make a 308 one piece hardened flywheel for all 308's. Also, I would have to place my specific 308 marks on the flywheel. Sounds good to me.
