Hi there, I am currently looking at three 458’s a 2011 with 6000 miles one owner lots of options , 2013 spider with 18000 miles and multiple owners and a 2014 spider with 23000 miles and am not sure about ownership history yet. All are priced about the same . I am leaning towards the 2011 because I am pretty sure it is in excellent condition, lots of carbon fibre , one owner and low miles. I have not seen any of the cars in person yet but hope to next week. I only know about 458’s what I have read online and the only caution I am seeing here and there is to be aware of 2010 and 2011 ‘s due to possible transmission issues. My question is , is this really an issue or an overblown internet thing where a small percentage had problems and it grew into look out it is going to blow up for sure .

Any information would be appreciated, I am really looking forward to getting a 458 , it will be my last car to add to my small collection , 2006 Gallardo gated SE , 2016 Shelby GT 350 , 2022 C8 HTC all cars I drive weekly and maintain them myself and the 458 will get slotted into the rotation .

Thanks very much for any information and or recommendations you guys can supply , it will be much appreciated.

The 2010-2011 is overblown and in fact every model year is susceptible but unlikely. For me it would boil down to the 2011 or the 18k mile Spider. Spiders and Coupes are a different experience. I like Spiders, owned an F430 Spider. Now I have a 2010 458 Italia coupe. I like the idea of one owner with lots of options. Buy the owner, not the car so to speak.

Thanks Kent, my Shelby had the same overblown issues around the engine , the flat plane shakes it apart and it uses a quart of oil every 400 miles according to the internet when in reality I think Ford replaced 110 engines out of 17000 over 5 years. Mine uses no more oil than my Gallardo , 1 quart every 1200 miles or so and is an awesome car.

I will pursue the 2011 next week.

I would tend to lean towards the one-owner as well but you should look until you are confident you’ve found the right car. It all depends on how good the owner or owners were to the car. The low miles on the 2011 is potentially an issue, no car was ever engineered to be parked and not driven so if not driven enough or at least at decent intervals then that can cause problems. I tend to favor cars driven 2k-3k miles per year.
Be very thorough in your homework and inspections of any car. Don’t commit a crime of passion and just buy something that looks good. Hidden issues or baggage can get real expensive real quick. She’ll take everything in the divorce. And yes I’m still talking about cars.

Nice little collection you’ve got going. My philosophy is the same. A few cars I can keep up with and enjoy and maintain myself.

If you like spiders,Id also look closely at the 18 k miler. That means that it has been driven a bit more and if there is a good maintence history and it is specced to your liking, there is nothing wrong with a higher mileage car. In fact some opinions are that the higher mileage cars may be a better choice for numerous reasons.Start driving the 6000 mi version and then things start to happen that had not been discovered, but if you let it sit, you never know. I have a high mileage spider 34K 5 owners and it is well specced. I have had only electrical problems with it but they were self-inflicted with after market additions that didn't work out as planned but eventually got sorted. Mechanically it has been bulletproof at least up to today.

Thanks Guys , I appreciate the responses . I do like the spider but the 18000 mile car has few options, multiple owners and an open recall which the owner says it does not , lots of red flags there . The other spider is red but has a cream interior which is not my favourite but it does have a lot of options, once I see it in person I may like it . I do all my own maintenance including changing a clutch in my Gallardo and from what I am reading here the 458 is a very dependable car especially if driven sensibly and maintained properly, so I am not to worried about cars with 20 to 30000 miles on them . I can usually tell pretty quick if a car has been tracked or not taken care of properly and then I will pass on it .

2012+ apparently has transmission electronics outside = easier to service

    For any year look at
    Lift Option
    Backup Camera Option
    Which seats (race?)
How many carbon bits inside and out

I would side with the 2011 if the condition is satisfactory. Most likely it is because that is not very many miles for a 2011 but worth checking out. Make sure to check the dash leather as it tends to shrink. Maintenance records and PPI too of course.

A client of mine let me drive his e-gear Gallardo for about two weeks. I can only imagine how much better a gated one would be. A great car with its own personality and much different, in my opinion, than the 458. It will be fun to hear your comparisons.

Thanks again for the welcome and all the information, I think the 2011 is checking all the boxes, back up camera, Daytona seats , carbon sport interior, front lift, carbon fibre rear diffuser, diamond cut sport wheels. Will check for sticky buttons, leather shrinkage and loose headliner when I see the car next week.

Luckily all the things you are going to check for are things that can be relatively easily fixed. I'm going to be in the market for a 458 in about a year so i'm excited to be where you are right now.

Went to see the 2014 spider today , first time I have actually been able to get close to a 458 and now I am really looking forward to getting one. Unfortunately this one is now sold. Hope to see the other red spider on Wednesday .

I like my spider a lot but I would rather have a coupe for the aesthetic, engine under glass, and stiffness. Other comments covered you well. Good luck on the search.

This is the reason i am not considering a Spider when i start looking for one at the end of the year. For me a big part of Ferrari ownership is being able to see that engine.

Saw the 2014 spider today. Owner seemed sincere , honest and knowledgeable, has had this car for three years while he has been waiting on his 296 . Car was free from nicks and scratches other than one spot on a rear rim. Car has front lift but rear carbon diffuser has been hit a few times. Brake pads were thick and looked new , tires were new Pirelli P Zero. A knob on the heater has fallen off which he is repairing , stitching on the passenger seat is ripped in one spot.

My biggest problem is the car was covered in salt from driving in Toronto in January . Who does that and if you did would you park it and leave it like that ? Rust on bolt heads under front bumper and also on some in engine compartment. I did not see anything to suggest car had been abused mechanically but lack of attention to cleaning and detailing did not sit well with me.

Going to see a 2011 coupe , low mileage, tomorrow. As Xxlon said I also would prefer a coupe over the spider . I will let you know how it goes and look forward to your comments and recommendations.

    Mark
