With CIII weapons, you also need the local DA or police chief (actually any elected official in your district), to sign off on the papers. Some of these officials, do not want to sign off on the papers. Some of these elected officials are anti-gun, and are also aware of the political liability of signing off on the papers.

The only use for a full auto feature, in a tactical hand held weapon, is for close range shooting. If this is the case, it is more effective to buy a SMG.

You can buy a short barrel M-16, but unless it has the 10.5 inch Hk 416 upper receiver, it will often malfunction because the gas pressure, is not sufficient to drive back the bolt. You can also buy a different buffer system, but I think the Hk 416 upper, is the way to go, if you want a short full auto M-16.

You certainly don't "need" to clean it every time, rarely clean any of mine unless they have fired corrosive ammo or they have gotten wet. In a more humid environment it is good to keep them lightly oiled to prevent rust but it's really not that much work if you aren't worried about being real clean. If it's looking a little gunky just squirt some WD-40 around in it to rinse things off then let it dry and wipe down with Rem Oil or something similar.

I stopped in to my local gun show and swap meet and there was LOTS of Ar-15s there. Most in the price range that you paid. However there was a M&P M4 totally unmodified and VERY lightly used for $850. Woulda done it but I am looking for a hobby project. Was there looking for stripped receivers to start a build project. There was one built lower receiver (Stag Arms) for $350 and that was it. I asked the guy who was selling the complete lower if he had any stripped lowers and he told me that they are getting to be big money and hard to inventory. He said that he would have some the next time that he comes into town. He said that they will probably be CMMG lowers and that they are going to be about $185 each (ouch). I figure that once it's complete I will have more into a built rifle than you have into one that is ready to go. It isn't a hobby if it's cheap...right?

I think that you did OK on the purchase at current prices probably didn't get a screaming good deal, but it is going to be a pittance once the new administration puts the kibosh on new black rifle production.

What Urotrash said is correct. Local ordinances vary and may limit your ownership rights.

If you live in a state where full auto is allowed you would need to apply for the tax stamp and then wait till they approve or deny your request. Once you have the stamp you have the ability to own a fully automatic rifle or handgun. Then all you need is the thousands of dollars that one costs and your good to go. Here's a full auto sear for $8,500 (sear only) http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=116974700

The group buy that I did was 80 for each lower. After the election all of the online shops were selling them for 150-250! Rediculous. Definately gouging, although people were still buying them like crazy. I'm about to buy 6 more, gotta have enough firepower to get all the zombies when they attack. But be careful, they come in waves, lol.

There are a couple places online Buzz that you'll be able to pick up a stripped Double Star Lower for about 90 dollars, I'll try and find you a link so hopefully we can save you a buck. Also, the guy who organized the Group Buy on the lowers I bought may have some stock left and he's going to be selling them for 82 a piece I think. I'll pm you the links. If it's okay with mods to post it in this thread also, I'd be happy to. I gain nothing from the links, but I'm always willing to help another find a good deal.

Here's the list of the main manufacturers of lowers:

CMMG is the same as DoubleStar. For about 100 more that what you'll pay from that guy for the stripped lower you can get the grip, trigger kit and 4 position stock with it.
    Links in your PM.

Congrats on the purchase, save it, someone will offer to buy it from you for more, lol. Just wait until it gets closer for Obama to get into office.
