About 30 days ago I purchased an Aventador from Ferrari Fort Lauderdale for our exotic car rental fleet here in the South East. This was purely a business decision so I ignored the negative comments and critics opinions of the car. My father, Top Gear, moderators on Lambo Power...etc all have voiced their disappointment of the car. Even I had some personal doubts as whether the car was truly a Lamborghini.

I have been around the Lamborghini brand my entire life. I have been fortunate to have driven all of the major supercars and few unique variants i.e. Miura S, Countach DD, Diablo SE30. While I am part of the generation "x," I actually have grown to appreciate vintage cars much more than their modern counterparts. Nothing sexier than a Ferrari 365 boxer or a Jaguar E-type.

After spending a few days in the Aventador and driving around 500 miles I must say that I am absolutely smitten. The Aventador is the first car that has intimidated since driving a Carrera GT. Its large presence, its ferocious start (upon engaging the aircraft inspired start button) and its 700hp. Ignore the critics statements this is not an Audi.

Yes, it drives amazingly easy in Strada mode, the steering is light, the brakes are awesome. Yes, it is oddly COMFORTABLE for a supercar. Yes, it has all the creature comforts and technology to sync your iPhone and get directions to the nearest Italian restaurant BUT this is not an Audi.

The Aventador makes remarkable cabin noises reminiscent of a Miura, It has terrible visibility like the Countach and omits the same intoxicating vibration felt through the cabin of a SE30 at acceleration.

In my eyes this car is the best of all worlds. Its raw Lamborghini yet slightly practical. Its insanely fast and scary in Corsa mode but docile and nimble around town. When was the last time that you could let your Diablo or Countach idle for more than 10 minutes without it puking fluids everywhere?

AND most importantly, I cannot remember a time since the Countach and maybe the Ferrari Enzo where I have seen a car attract so much attention.

I guess what I am trying to say... is that I am impressed. I think Lamborghini captured the most important elements of its history while progressing towards the future.

If I am not mistaken - one of the British Top Gear hosts suggested in was the best Hypercar on the market!?
These cars speak to us all differently and some people will find fault in anything, rather than trying to understand/accept what Lamborghini's interpretation of a Hypercar is in this present day.
I have always said - we love our children, for different reasons and these cars are no different.
Let them speak to you in their language vs making them try to speak yours.
I have been invited to drive a new Aventador on a 12 hour journey and can't wait!

hi Guru, i appreciate very much your writing. I just moved the Aventador in a big car park, but the emotion i felt was the same i had the first time i drove my Countach.

That's never happened to me before on any Ferrari, Lamborghini, or Porsche i drove: Countach was miles ahead.

But this LP700 ties the Countach brutal seduction: it's really a masterpiece.

Top Gear is just a show, they often tell some stupid things just to make the show and entertain the share.

Other forum moderators (i think you mean Allan) have their opinion about LP700, but i do not share that opinion and nor is shared by most of supercar enthusiasts.

I think this car is a big hit and a masterpiece almost like Countach was: it has the same savage line, the same intimidating power if compared to our time levels.
Demand is still very high and Lamborghini production cannot satisfy it despite the big efforts they are doing to reduce LP700 production time of assembly.

This car outscores Murcielago and 599 too: this is the best Lamborghini since Countach, imho.

I hope to live enough to buy a vintage LP700 one day, to put aside my CT.

    ciao

    Alberto

I agree with the opinions about the Aventador expressed on this thread. I drove the car at my local dealer and I was privilged to see the car in a private showing about 4 months before its Geneva introduction. I sometimes think that the audience that grew up with the Countach or Miura want to minimize the achievement of the Aventador design largely for understandable and nostalgic reasons. I believe that the Aventador design will be an enduring one and that it will evoke a large following (as a classic) similar to the V12 pre-cursors to this car Lamborghini built.

Now, anyone heard anything about the Roadster version of this car? Will it be shown in the upcoming Paris Salon?

    Unfortunately, no manual box.

At the least, they should have offered a manual, as an extra cost option.

The A is a total win for the only company with the balls to put a mid-engined 12 into the marketplace on a continuing basis.

Wow, I did not know that because I only look at pictures! But I'm not surprised.

Paddles are useless, boring, and inconvenient unless you are racing it.....imo.

I have a feeling in years down the road, a manual WILL make a comeback.....you guys just watch, when we're all old and crusty, still playing cars on this message board, I will remind you of this.

Highly unlikely because that would be going against the grain of progress. Of course progress is indeed a relative word. The problem is that our youth has been bottle fed on Granturismo and forza video games with paddles and buttons that most wouldnt even consider a manual anymore. They are the ones that will be inheriting the earth and manuals sadly will not be in their equation.

Great to hope manual makes a comeback and we can always hope. But the sad truth is it is going away just like roll up windows and paperback maps;)

The manual is not coming back.

What is the average age, for new buyers ?

Guess what ? With the automatic, the wife can also drive the car.

Thank you for response. It is awesome to see that someone else with first hand knowledge and experience of the vintage cars feels the same.

    Peter,

I think your optimism is great but I think that MOST road cars always follow the path of racing cars.

I.e. F1 transmission, Carbon Fiber, and now KERS systems.

Unless we see a change in the racing world I doubt we will see a change in road cars.

That being said... I HOPE you are right. : )

    Paddles (dousche levers) are ghey
They are for tool that can't drive like actors, athletes, posers, ect but want to show off and look cool and impress people
You are not micheal schumacher and shaving 3 seconds off your daily commute to work is NOT important to anyone.
Throw in thrust and launch controls and driving modern cars is like a video game, only less inspiring. I was litterly bored after 5 mins test driving a supperleggera. How sad is it that you get bored test driving a lamborghini!!!

Ill keep my diablo 6.0 and cgt till I die and row the gates happily.
Some day ill add a f40 and MANUAL lp640

    Cars are a passion,

    driving is a passion,

Paddles are dull and uninspiring. Ill gladly be a few ticks slower with a big smile on my face as opposed to these over price computer games known as exotics.

This all from an "old fogy" under 30 :-(

Sadly thats how most men can get the purchase ok frm the wife (who let's someone else tell them how they can spend thier own money anyways!?!?)
When he brings up lambo, ferrari, porsche she thinks young slutty flosies and cheating. Once he point out he paddles and auto "A" button suddenly she thinks how jealous all her gfs will be and how hot she will look driving it

    Sigh

I WISH for this to be true. I, however, think it will prove incorrect, sadly.

The pic of the legs sticking out of the door just makes me chuckle.

Dcx,i just share a bit of what you wrote, not all.
May be in the USA, where 99% cars have a full auto transmission, a manual gearbox with open grid is sexy and for "machos". But here in Europe we all grew up on s h y tty small cars with manual gearbox trasmissions: paddles have a race heritage that a manual shift does not have anymore. And the "machine gun" action of a dual clutch transmission is very impressive. I like manual transmission, but they are perfect just on vintage cars like my Countach.

    ciao

E-gear is a hell of a lot of fun. I have a manual in my Murci and seriously don't know which transmission I prefer more. E-gear is so violent, it goes with the car so well.

I believe my Gallardo is a cleaner design all the way around than the Aventador. I simply love the Gallardo shape and think it will stand the test of time. And I like that all of its vents/scoops are functional. (Unlike the Audi R8 whose center grill is there for decoration only- not to mention so many other cars with fake vents/scoops).

The Aventador has a LOT going on it its design. Too many angles, etc. It is not the world's most beautiful car, but it sure as hell looks aggressive. That being said, I wouldn't kick one out of my garage.

And I love the one-off red Aventador roadster.

Speaking of design, Ferrari did a great job with the new Italia Spider. But I digress...
