Yes, you can damage the lift system. The system is held up by the shocks that are filled with power sterring fluid via a pump that draws the fluid from the power steering resivoir. These shocks have nothing to do with the suspension of the car, just the raise and lower of the front end. When up ther is approx 1800 lbs of pressure in these shocks to keep the nose up. The pressure is both maintained by the vacuum and pressure via the pump, as well as the seals and close system of the shock, which is now filled with the fluid and pressure. Leaving it "pressurized" up, espically with the engine off, (fails to keep up the pump pressure) for periods of time, can cause the seals to weaken and start to leak. Fairly common on earlier cars such as the Diablo and the Murcie cars. While the system has been greatly improved, (seals mainly) from the earlier years, it is still not good for the sysetm to have this pressure for perios of time and in-activety. I always recomend lowering the car fully prior to shut off when the car is in-operative. It is also a good idea to raise the car only after the motor/pump have been running for abou 30 seconds after start-up, gives time for the pump and system to pressuraize prior to its use. FYI, the system, of course can be lowered manualy and raised manualy at any time with the speed of the car under approx 41MPH. If you fail to lower the car, it will automaticaly lower itself when speed of approx 41 mph is achieved.
Congratulations on the new car. Enjoy it. I drove one last week and really enjoyed the differences between it and the 560. Not having the awd is great for low speed corners and parking. It definitely takes more attention to drive the 550 hard. Enjoy it and be safe. My thoughts on the car are here: http://supercarrentalsinc.com/the-lamborghini-gallardo-lp550-2-valentino-balboni-2/
Well stated Roy, you've undoubtedly had experience with leaky lift shocks. It's also a good idea to approach speed bumps and potholes slowly when in the raised configuration to avoid a seal failure. The lift system is handy but not well engineered by Koni.
I appreciate all this info. about the lift system.I am on my 6th. Lambo and did not know this. Eric BTW these are cell phone pics from the tow truck driver.I will post some better pics after i get the car in the garage.
FYI, dont be worried, I do not think this one time lift up is a worry...did not mean to make your delivery happy day a rain on day...sorry.. Also, FYI, a few things 1) If people have a leaky shock, there is no need to replace it with a new one, they can be easily rebuilt for around $600 or so instead of the $2200 parts replace from Lambo 2) If it is a small leak, and you can live with it, again it WILL not effect the operation of the cars drive, you will just have to check and keep your power steering resivor filled. 3) if you spot, red power steering fluid on your garage floor in the front wheel areas, this is a sign your shocks are leaking, as well as they are wet and damp up in the car. Another issue, on the older cars, (All Diablos and Murcie up to the LP640) where your up and down dash light flickers, (does not go off or fully on) or your center counsel suspension setting system shows a red error light.. Fix for this is the Lambo shop, to replace shock...DONT do it..90% of the time it is the UP/DOWN sensors located in the engine rear passanger side that tell the sysetm the shocks are fully loaded or not. There are two sets, one each for each shock in the up position and one each for each shock in the down position for the front, as well as four others for the rear shocks for the suspension setting. Quite often these sensors have become corrodied, got wet, dirty or jusy failed..have the shop clean them first..and then with the computer if the cleaning does not work..MOST of the time does, they can see which of the sensors is in-operative. Have those replaced FIRST, come in sets, a lot cheaper and usually the fix for the problem. Again, as with the lift system, if it is the suspension system ride control..IT WILL not effect your drive other than it will not have AUTO settings come on, you will still be able to set the settings manually. Another sign that your suspension/suto ride may be going bad, the sensors that is, is that you will see more and more your auto setting green light sitting in the 3 position almost all the time, this is the fail safe setting from the ECU.
here are a few from today that i took eric... once again crappy cell pics.. sorry Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
