    Hey Gang,
I had to pull one of my drive shafts and replace a leaking transaxle seal, so I decided to rebuild both CV joints, and document the whole thing. David "Fastradio" Feinberg and a few other Ferrari buddies came over to help. We demolished some donuts and David gave me the "rebuilder's 101" on CV joints as well as the proper way to replace the seal in the driver's side of the transaxle. I took pics and wrote it up in order to add it to the growing list of service procedures I'm archiving at Birdman Ferrari. Check it out

Great write up. One question about this line and it is self evident:

    DSC discussion:
"You can use a little silicone to lube it so it goes in smoothly. You do not want to use lubricant like silicone,..."

So, which is it? Use silicone or not?

    Excellent write up!

I believe the WSM specifies 140 grams of grease in the joints though.

A very minor detail: AFAIK only the left hand inner joint has the extra washers on the bolts.

    Nice write up.

This is a nice one to save for the time where I'll need it.

I'm sure David is listening in somewhere. Any significant differences for the 328 with this procedure?

    Agree, that Birdman can write!

It does. Lobro makes the 108mm CV joints which were used on many super cars in the day. They specify 100gr for this joint, as do all the other manufacturers who used this joint in the late 1960s through 1980s. The WSM has many errors, this being one of the more minor ones...

Correct. Perhaps better stated, only the LHS inner CV bolts have washers on them, in addition to the semi-circular thrust washers.

    Identical

You're welcome. It was a fun day! The Birdman and crew did all the hard work; dis-assembly and cleaning. All I did was show them how to put it all back together... :D

Sorry, that is a little confusing. I'll have to fix that tomorrow. That's what happens when you write too fast. You are lubing the seal with RTV basically. The idea is that you DO NOT want to lube with something that stays slippery like oil or silicone spray. RTV is slippery when you install the seal, allowing it to slide into position without warping or kinking, but then later is no longer slippery, so the seal will not want to move.

Hey man, I only did the left rear! When I do the right rear I'll post an addendum!!! :D

I'm happy to say that David's (fastradio's) complete CV boot kit arrived in today's mail. A terrific value. I'm looking forward to getting those joints cleaned up and resealed. I'll make good use of the tutorial.

Does anyone have the torque values for the six nuts on the DSC? I couldn't find it in the WSM and quite frankly I don't really trust the WSM. Thanks.

I believe Birdman's write up states 57 ft-lbs at the bottom of the article.

Hi, Isnt he talking about the CV flange to axle bearing bolts? I'm referencing the DSC cover (with new seal) bolts. Thanks.

    Birdman, Great rite up!

    David,

What is the purpose of the extra LHS inner CV washers? I was not aware of this and only used the same components I took off. Are the thrust washers you are talking about the semicircular metal pictured below? Should I be worried I dont have these. Where do they go on the bolt end? The parts books dont even show the semicircular bits? I have done this 3 times and was not aware of them.

    Thanks,

    Rob

I believe its just a clearance issue Robert - the washers go on the hex head side of the bolt on top of the long/semi circle washers in your picture & thereby ensure there is a bit less bolt/thread sticking out the other side (where the nuts go) to make sure the ends of the bolts don't catch on the ends of the studs sticking out the diff housing

Having changed all the boots on my CV joints, I can only think one thought; has anyone ever seen more grease in one place .

    Is David F
Is David Feinberg still selling these kits? How about the double lipped drive shaft seal mentioned? If so, how may I reach him?
