    World of difference.

I used one of Maserati Sources front end kits in front, and then did the ES inner bushing replacements on the back, and new QA1 shocks. Big difference in ride, and lack of shock clunking. Replaced CV joint boots at same time, as one popped open in the last month. CV joints looked brand new, fortunately.

Sway bar bushings still should be replaced, but that isn't a big deal, that can be dealt with later. Not having the car sound like some front suspension part was going to fall off because of the shock clunking was the main goal this go around. The ball joints weren't bad, only the tie rod ends and rubber bushings really needed replacement.

Doug, I just bought the same kit front and back from Maserati Source.

Do you have a good source for either the tie rod ends or sway bar bushings? Those are the last two pieces I need to find.

I got the tie rod ends from Rutlands, about $100 for the set.

They probably have sway bar bushings also. One of my steering rack inner joints under the rubber boot should be replaced, but I didn't discover that until I had the car apart.

    Got pictures of the process?
I also got that kit and a full set of polyurethane bushings for my 328. I plan to do that job next winter.
    Was it straightforward? Any tips?

Doug, what kit did you use from Maserati Source? I don't see anything 308 specific on their website.

    No pics.

It is as straight forward as can be and easier than most American cars because the ball joints are bolted to the control arms, not riveted.

Read Birdmans description and see his pics on the urethane inner replacement project if you are going that route.

Count all your alignment shims/washers and locations when removing the control arms and lower ball joints so you can put them back the same and drive the car to get it four wheel aligned afterward.

Change your CV boots while you are at it as long as you have the car that far apart. I should have changed the steering rack boots and inner swivel joints, but didn't think about ordering the parts prior, and didn't want my car apart for another week, and those can be changed with minimal hassle at another time.

Congrats. I used Maserati Source too for ball joints. His prices were great! Did you do the outer bushings in the rear as well?

    Cheers

    No, just the elastomers.

    Rear outers were fine.

Maybe it was because the car was rarely driven in the rain.

In the 25 years I have owned the car, I can probably count on both hands and one foot the number of times that the car has gotten wet other than being washed.

Even at 80K miles, all four ball joints were OK,and the rubber bushings weren't bad.

A local Ferrari mechanic said he has seen 30K miles cars in a lot worse condition than mine.

Could be the previous owners drove it in the rain? the car spent most of its life in TX. In the 7 years i have owned the car, I only drove it in the rain once and it was not planned, just a little CA shower. I think i have only washed the car three times since i have owned it. Not a big fan of dumping water on it. I dry wash it frequently with quick detailer and have only put 4k miles on it in 7 years. To me it was silly not to do it anyway since i was in there. Now I have a totally new suspesnion, not a partly new one.

    Cheers,

    Paul

I did this job last year and is fully documented in the archives. To me, this is one of the most satisfying/rewarding DIY projects you can do to your 308 because you can FEEL the results immediately! It is easy and straightforward to do and can be done in a weekend or two, or three or more. I did poly bushing up front and while they squeak just a little bit over slow speed bumps, in the corners they transform the car!
