Just trying to get some opinions on a new company logo. I run a photography business (well, three technically), and I'm looking for a new logo to start my branding. This logo is for my wedding/portrait/headshot business. Let me know which ones you like. Thanks in advance for the feedback!

While I haven't done it in a while, my degree is in Graphic Design so I've been in your dilemma before. After looking over your choices a number of times, I remain drawn to #52, but ditch the "reflection". The most important thing to consider in a good logo or mark is that it MUST work in black/white as well as color. Keeping it simple is one of the best ways to reach this goal.

I do know the first few are showing a piece of film, but it immediately made me think of the motion picture industry rather than still photography.

You should have put in a poll in this thread.

Your name reminds me of Thomas Haas, a chocolatier in my town.

I like the TH logo by Neverwhere but not the font of the accompanying name. Your consumer is women who will choose the photographer. I'd go with a clean, 'delicate' font like a Helvetica Neue Light/Ultra Light or a light Futura.

62, 67, 56 have closer to what I'm thinking, although I think the squarish logo in 67 is too masculine. Lots of nice choices though, what's there is better than a lot of what's out in the small business world.

Most of the designs have the same flaw.
Until your brand name is well known, the most important part of your logo is the word "Photography".
In almost every design, that word is diluted. It is either much smaller, or in soft gray letters, or in a non-white color like orange on a black background.
It is critical that the viewer see the word "Photography" right away.

However, it is typical for marketing people to do the inverse. For example "Starbucks Coffee", typically the "coffee" part is diminished.
But Starbucks is a well-known brand and they have spent a fortune on advertising and store placement to make that a reality.
Same thing with Block-Buster Video and Best Buy Electronics. Very common graphic design emphasis on national branded companies.
So, your graphic designer is trying to mimic that national branding feel.

For a micro-business, don't underestimate the value of what you do being prominent and easy to read.
I'd go back to the designers and ask them to emphasis the word "photography" in some new examples.

Also, your letterhead and business cards are critical to your success. You're not going to want the black background version of your logo on that media. So, IMHO, the most important version to pick from is the white background version. Insist on every design choice looking great on a white background. The only time I think you'll end up using the black background version is on your web page.

BTW, I have no formal training in graphic design or marketing. So, maybe you should ignore my advice.
My advice is based on common sense and being a small business owner. YMMV.

    Just my 2 cts.
    Live long and prosper.

    Leaning towards 57.

Oh, and since I own a company that provides services to professional photographers (Folders, frames, albums, etc) I've seen more than my share of Photographer's logos over the years.

Couple of ingredients to remember, one of which has been pointed out.

    1. Must also work in black and white.
    2. Ditch anything with screens, they won't stamp cleanly on mounts, folders etc.
    3. Try to find something unique, but it also has to be abundantly clear what it is you do for a living.

I've taken 57 (roughly), and tweaked it to remove screens and show what it looks like as gold on black, which would be traditional for folders and albums. Also tweaked slightly to work on a white background.

I've been a professional graphic designer & photographer for about 30 years. My opinion is:
96 is strong but lose the lens thing. 95 is clean & to the point. 57 is nice w/ friendlier font & fun colors. If your target customer is women for weddings, choose gold or pastels instead of red on black. Red is great for a serious photojournalist but not for a kinder, gentler, sensitive photographer. You could always script your own initials & finesse them in Photoshop for a truly custom look. Think about what will look good reversed on white too.

Wow, thanks for all the great feedback! I thought a couple people might respond, but I am so grateful for all of the great ideas this has generated. And you definitely have given me some things that I had not thought of yet. I am leaning towards 55 and 57 right now.

Still think 57 is the winner? I like it a lot, I'm just trying to look at all of them before I decide. Tomorrow at noon is the deadline.
