Backing the 328 out of the garage for the weekly drive, shifting from reverse into 1st. The shift lever moved into the 1st position...but the car stayed in reverse. Shifter will not come out of the 1st position (clutch/no-clutch) and vehicle will not come out of reverse.

And it is such a nice day for a quick drive!!!!

Any suggestions on where to begin?

...and I was just fixin' to change the gearbox oil....go figure

Sounds like shift linkage. Maybe something came apart. Hope it's easy.

I am really sorry to hear about your problem. If it was me I would probably try gently rocking the car back and forth while someone else tried to move the shifter into neutral. I hope some others chime in here to help you out. Good luck.

Shift linkage from shifter to engine block is intact.

Removed the shifter gate....car shifted into neutral. Went into reverse and first in the garage. All seems well...hmmmm

Likely your adjustment inside the gearbox, as well as perhaps the adjustment in front of the gearbox is "off". It took me longer to scrape the old gasket off than it did to check adjustments and close it up.

If the lever is even slightly off from left to right, or fore and aft, it can cause trouble.

The OWM gives a very good account of the lever adjustment. I would try that first.

sounds like the tranny shifted somehow and the gate restricted the shifting. just my .02

The test run around the neighborhood was successful. No problems and the car shifted as normal.

It seemed odd the lever could shift into 1st position but remain in reverse. I'll have a look in the OWM for lever adjustment.
