I just purchased a 1972 365 GTB/4 VIN# 16553. Does anyone have old photos of this car or know anything about its history?

Check with Gerald Roush at 770.381.1993. He should have info on your cars past history.

I would love to post pictures, but I haven't gotten the car yet. I bought it through the Car Experience, a car broker in Canada. The car should arive by Friday on next week. I've already registered it to be in a local car show on June 5. The car is reported to have a near perfect body and mechanicals, but that the interior need to be refreshed.

I had been looking for one since March, but couldn't find one anywhere. this was the first one that was in good condition and that came with the books, tools and records and it had a 3 year old bare metal paint job (the funny thing is that I've now found 2 other cars that sound like they are in as good of condition, but are cheaper, oh well). The broker indicated that it is a U.S. car that spent most of its life in the Netherlands and in Toronto.

I'll give you guys more scoop after I've had a chance to look at all of the records

Pardon my ignorance, but isn't the time to research a car's history BEFORE you drop $100,000 or so on the purchase? I've researched bare Corvette frames and empty transmission cases before I made the deal just to make sure that I know what I'm buying. I can't imagine dropping 100 grand without tracking down all available history on the car in an attempt to guarantee 2 things: 1. that the car is genuine and not a rebuilt piece of junk, and
    2. that the car wasn't stolen 30 years ago in Europe.

Gerald Rousch's book lists sn 16553 as a USA daytona on page 147. When I purchased my second daytona some years I ago, I wrote the Ferrari factory hoping to get information on my purchase. They did acertain that the car was a USA model, its orginal color, and who imported it. They even told me what type of wheels it had. You might want to write to them and ask about yours...and as suggested earlier, give Mr. Roush a call. He is the publisher of the FML, the biweekly guide to the Ferrari market.

Don't fret about your purchase. I am sure you did well, and you will enjoy this car a lot. Just remember old cars are like a bad habit...you will find something wrong every day, every week, every month...but it will be a great source of satisfaction when you find the missing part and you make your car more perfect. Enjoy and sincere congratulations.

Randy Me too! Just purchased a datona chassis 14677. Its done a total of 37,000 miles and had a new engine 22,000 miles ago when it was rebuilt at Modena engineering here in the uk. Am in the process of having a new larini sports exhaust and manifolds fitted. There is another good forum for Daytonas at www.daytonaregistry.com, Bill is the technical guru. If I could bottle the smell of the interior in my car after a good run, I could sell it as perfume! See attached pics, look foreward to seeing yours.

    Safe Driving

    Nope.
When I bought 0846 I thought it was "0003" . If I had researched it before I would have had to pay way more.

I did do a ton of research. The guy from the Car Expereince sent me 100s of pictures and even a video. It was inspected twice, a service was performed and there was a compression test done on the engine. I was also given a guarantee by The Car Expereince, who I think has a good reputation. I was just hoping someone on this site would have old pictures of it or know some unique history surrounding it. Further, these cars are selling quick. I've chased down a few over the last 3 months, only to have them bought from under me because I waited a day or 2.

I bought my 330 2+2 Fall/early Winter '02 the same way you bought your car, and it turned out just fine. It was the same situation--a lot of buyers with cash in hand for solid 330's and I was unable to travel at the time--had to get while the getting was good.

    By the way, Congratulations!!

Randy first of all you're fortunate to have found a Daytona. I haven't really seen any for sale in some time. With regards to your purchase some time ago another FChatter provided an excel worksheet with many Daytona s/n. This is what showed up on 16553. Hope it provides some clues for you. Note the color conversion. Good luck and congratulations.

This means that I have seen the car at that specific auction and that I should have some more information about it at home. The auction itself was related to the collection of Charles Zwolsman, which was seized by the Dutch government. After many, many years of legal actions related to drugs, the government sold a big part of the collection. I will check if I can find some additional information ...
