After more than two years work my Dino book is now available. The book contains all about "Dino": the "Brand" Dino, the history, the prototypes, the race Dino Modells, all Fiat Dino Versions, a chapter about Lancia Stratos, one about Dino Scale modells, all brochures, an overview about all the Dino 246 modell changes, how it is build, an engine and Dinoplex chapter, all Dino colours, lists of internet adresses, publications, and so on. Jim allowed my to get great pictures from his Dino Competizione rework at Pinifarina too and they are all included in the Dino prototype chapter. Unfortunately the current first edition is in only german and currently there is no english version planned yet. May be due to 460 pictures on 388 pages still worth to have a look at it? I have no clue if you can order it outside of germany. The link to the book company is: http://www.paul-pietsch-verlage.de/index.php?aktion=ausgabe&saktion=detail&darst=d&az=&mp=&ump=&sa=&saktion_begin=&lk=&bestnr=&autornr=&sustr=&grp=&datsatz=&detail=03145&sort=&saktion1=&id=xw99900ZoePGUZ6jOr7fc2wTD20100711133434&navid=1 Best regards Nicolai Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Congratulations, Nicolai! It is good you have a Stratos on the cover too. I will see how to order one. Now an English edition?
Thank you. I found it on AMAZON.de but not on AMAZON.com. Maybe you can order it over the german website? http://www.amazon.de/Dino-Nico-Schumacher/dp/3613031450/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1278870143&sr=1-1 Tell me if it doesn´t work and I will ask the book company for any alternative. Regards Nico
Hello Nico, I just read through your new book and sorry Nico I have to say I´m very disappointed. The quality of the pictures, many spelling mistakes and most important the lack of professional competence if it comes to Ferrari Dino topic makes it very difficult to come up with a positiv view. I think these lovely cars deserve better. Had anybody else a change to read through the book jet? Any similar or different opions? Regards Matthias
Matthias, Do you know if and when the Brian Long book is ever going to come out? Motorbooks here in the US has been postponing the publication date for about two years. Best, Dan
No Dan, I don`t know. I have no idea why it`s postponed and postponed again. Same here in Europe. Regards Matthias
This is Amazon eta: shipment 1 of 1 Not yet shipped Delivery Estimate: July 19, 2011 Regards, Alberto
Alberto, If you're referring to the Brian Long book, I'll believe it when I see it. I think that the original due date was May or June of '08, and it has been postponed time and time again. I have it on backorder with Motorbooks, and at one point they contacted me to find out if I wanted to cancel. Since of course they don't bill until it ships, I told them to keep my order open. Dan
Dan, That's the one. Patience... I am sorry you are selling that beatiful germoglio. Unfortunately in El Salvador, it is illegal to own a RHD car. Go figure... Regards, Alberto
Hi Matthias, in my mind you are a bit too hard but it is true there are lot's of mistakes in the book. So don't use this book as a reference guide for a correct restoration. But there are beautiful pitures at the end of the book and esp. the story about the 206 Berlinetta Competizione (not Competitione as written in the headline of this chapter) is very interesting. All in all every Dino freak who can read the german language should have this book in his collection of Dino books. Volkmar
These lawyers, always political correct ;-) "Competitione", I even didn`t noticed this mistake jet.... I agree 10% of the pictures are nice, but the rest?! Regards Matthias
To be honest you critic is so general and about everything that I can´t take it serious. You are the only one I know about with this opinion and I got 100 % oposite feedback from all german buyers in the forum or on amazon. If I was able to get pictures from the beginning of Dino life which was 40 years ago taken by non professionals and long before digital camera age, there are mostly from a poor quality thats true (like the blue Dino tool picture for the body from scaglietti). Other pictures like from all the Dino race cars were taken from the guys from http://www.redinfocus.com/ and I don´t think they make pictures with bad quality. (See their Hompegage or the Dino 206S). The pictures from Jims Competizione were taken by Pininfarina during the service and were nowhere else available, also nice to hear that these are not worth a positive result. And finally the whole chapter were a well known photographer took during two days the pictures of our ride with an red L-Series, an yellow M-Series and a blue E-Series GTS (Car from 500TR) are really great. I have no clue what kind of problem you have personally with me (and here is not the right place for this discussion) but you denied any support of the book without explanation. I am interested to get later more feedback from other guys when they get my book. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
"you denied any support of the book without explanation" I`m wondering, why I found 19 pictures taken by myself in your book, not named and without my final approval.... regards Matthias
Matthias, you send me the pictures at the beginning of my work two years ago especially for the book, I kept your mails. I also thanked you at the end of the book and mentioned your name. I apologized that the book company forgot to name you as Dino specialist. During the last year when I asked you for pictures about your 206 restauration which would have been interesting for all readers I got no answere. Asking about the reason and what the problem is I got only: "sorry I could not give you anything". The other way around you got everything from me if it was requested. Especially when you started with your interests in Dinos as a Newbie. Maybe you forgot that I send you all collected informations from the Dino Owners Club and what I got a long time ago from Denny Shue to start with your r egister. Without my consultation you would have bought the first black Dino GTS in really bad condition. But again I don´t know why you want to discuss that with all the guys here?. You have given your statement and now everybody can make his own picture. BTW : The book is now also several times on ebay.de ;-)
Hi, all! I received my copy of the book last week and I have to admit that I was disappointed, too. Nico's idea of how to structure this book and of what had to be in it was very, very good: Showing the development of the Dino, listing the alterations and modifications in detail - brillant! Listing the options and colours - superb! The exclusive photos of Mr. Glickenhaus picking up the Berlinetta Competizione - gorgeous! BUT - and this has to be a big "but": I have the impression that the book needed to be finished to one particular deadline and that many chapters and / or topics were handled under intense pressure. I cannot comment on the Fiat Dino topic since I don't have a clue about it. My critique is referring to the chapters related to the Ferrari Dino models, which should be acceptable in this forum. The most important things in brief: - The book is simply named "Dino". This title implies that the book covers EVERYTHING related to the automobiles bearing this name. Instead, Nico totally omitted the Dino 308 GT4 and its 208 GT4 derivate. I am sorry, but this is unacceptable for a book named "Dino". If one decides to - for whichever reason - omit the important 308 GT4 topic, then one has to chose a name like "Dino - the V6 cars" or thelike. Every Dino 308 GT4 owner will be disappointed. Imagine 308 GT4 owners buying the book unseen and wrapped - they will really wonder what happened to "their" model! - The imprint indicates that the text in the book was, like in all new books, revised / redacted by somebody; sorry, no signs of that! The number of linguistic mistakes, misspellings etc. is enormous and embarassing. In particular, the redactor obviously didn't read the tables / spreadsheets. Some were erroneously duplicated, and some were just brought into the book by copy / paste from www.dinoregister.com! The book is all German, but suddenly English designations and English text appear in a table referring to colours! As I said, the list of errors is long and I don't want to go into detail here. - The book contains many factual errors. No doubt: The Ferrari history is complicated, and profound information are often difficult or impossible to get. There will always be errors and misinterpretations in books and articles on Ferrari. But the number of factual errors in this book that intends to be authorative on the Dino topic is simply too high. The research time was obviously too short - which brings us back to my impression that the book had to be finished for one particular deadline. In some parts the text and the tables even are conflicting and contradictory: Once Nico states the number of Dino 206 GTs as 150, some pages later the number is given as 152! Sorry, this is too negligent for an authorative book. - It is easy to notice that the complicated topic of the Dino V6 engine in various race cars isn't Nico's favorite. The chapter is way too short and doesn't provide too many facts. Furthermore, there are hardly any historical photos, just modern photos taken during historic racing events or thelike. I know, it takes much time and money to collect historical photo material, but if one decides to publish a book, then this is the - hard - way to go! - The selection and reproduction of the photos is mostly horrible! I think that the publisher, too, is to blame for that. But Nico's photo selection is sometimes, sorry to say, just ridiculous. Worst case is the photo that was chosen to illustrate the "Daytona" seat-style: Nico chose a photo that was taken through a closed (!!!) and thus mirroring side window, and on top of that, the Daytona seats in the car are FAKE Daytona seats, so not the real McCoy! Gee, didn't you have one opportunity to take proper photos of a genuine Daytona style interior? Photos were cut in a strange way, the publisher decided to photoshop all registration plates in the photos, which looks awkward, and so on and so on and so on! Needless to say that there are also good photos: I like the photos with the cars of Nico, Götz and Volkmar that were taken for this book (?), and I also like the exclusive photos of Mr. Glickenhaus taking possession of the Berlinetta Competizione @ Pininfarina's, as mentioned earlier. But the majority of the photos, especially the photos showing details on the cars, is simply awful. I don't want to continue my critique further than this point, although there would still be something left to say. Again: I think Nico's idea of "what's gotta be in such a book" was great, it's simply missing the excellence of execution. Nevertheless, this book will help the Dino topic to gain additional popularity, at least in the German speaking part of the world. Since the translation of Jean-Pierre Gabriel's book from the early 1980s (?), there had been no other reliable source on the topic. My personal advise: Keep the structure of the book, collect additional photos and information, correct as many errors as possible, either add a chapter on the 308 GT4 or rename the book, and go for a second edition in a couple of years! An in-depth book like yours on the fascinating Dino topic is badly needed!
You both are right, my apologies. Jim, If you have problems to get the book I would send you one of course too. Regards Nicolai
That's a real bummer. I might have considered buying the book, but if there is no GT4 info, it's useless for me. Dom
Hi I was able to get one from the UK. Should be here soon. Best To You and Your Dad! Hope to see Both of you at the 24 of the Ring when we bring P 4/5 C.
