Yesterday I installed some new bonnet struts (from Ricambi) on my 328. I had finally grown tired of being knocked in the head every time I open the hood in temps under 100+ degrees! This AM was a good test - 45 degrees which, with the old ones would have resulted in the hood falling fast enough to knock me senseless ( which may not require much). Lifted it up and it stayed as if bolted into position! An added benefit is that the new ones are slightly longer so they open the hood further which is helpful.

I had read the standard mantra re the falling bonnets, "They all do that." But clearly the only reason they do it is because the old ones are worn out.

I realize the struts may be able to be purchased for less elsewhere but I like dealing with folks who know what they are doing and Ricambi clearly does.

I bought mine on Ebay for $80 (both). OEM company, but the struts are all black as opposed to the original black on bottom and silver on top. At shows and gatherings, I fully pop the bonnet up while still sitting in the car.

+1 on replacing struts. I put it off on the front hood of my Mondial. It should have been the first thing I did. I don't spend a lot of time in there, but there is something great about it not being an issue. When the new ones start to go bad I'll replace them again.

I got mine rebuilt from that place in Canada. (I can find the contact info if anyone needs it). They rebuild them to new, they work great, cost less than replacement, and you keep your original struts on the car (with the little Horsies on them, etc).

The ones Ricambi supplies (Stabilus) are all black like the "Ferrari" struts though, of course they don't say "Ferrari." But at a glance they look the same. I really like the fact that they open the bonnet what amounts to 5-6" more than the oem.

Hmm, interesting, didn't know about the larger opening. Larger opening should actually cut the load on the struts, as a higher angled lid will require less lifting/supporting force than a lower lid. Higher = less force = longer life, too?
