Anyone planning to buy the new 1952 Grand Prix de Pau, Alberto Ascari #32, Exoto Tipo 500 F2 Short Nose Ferrari? I should have mine in about a week. Also I didn't have to join their club to have one in my collection but I found it on ebay instead. IMO, it's a very nice car and it will look nice next to my other five red Exoto F500 F2 Ferraris in my collection. I like to hear your thoughts on it. ;)

I have the original and the Swaters Exoto 500, as well as the CMC 500. If you do not have an Exoto 500F2, I'd recommend one. But for me, the problem is there are so many other amazing new pieces hitting the market now that I've already pre-ordered, inclucing the CMC Phill Hill Dino and 250 Testa Rossa. And I am trying to find a couple of retired models as well! I'm way overspending my budget, but these are epic pieces!

I imagine Exoto is trying to squeeze as much profit out of the 500F2 as possible, and it is not a bad one to do that with.

Also, if you do not have the CMC long nose 500F2, it is a brilliant model as well and worth consideration as a partner piece to the Exoto.

Yes, I agree with what you're saying and I too have the CMC 500 F2, including all the red Exoto F500 F2 Ferraris which each car has small body detail changes that makes each one different from the other... I just can't help myself as I bought all of them for my collection. I think both Exoto and CMC did an excellent job with the detail work on their Ferraris, I don't think one is better than the other. :D

I agree as well - they both have their strengths.
And another one - the Exoto 246 front engined car - advertised at $400!!! Holy cow! It would be perfect to have Hawthorne's Exoto front engined 246 next to Phill Hill's CMC mid engined 246, but this is getting expensive!
Any release date on the Exoto 246?

Nope... Exoto had the 246 Ferrari on their website for the last year.. So Who knows! I also can't wait for the 126 C2, 312T2, and the 246 to come out so I can add them to my collection....

Also, I'm not sure how many of you guys know about the new Exoto Collector's Club that's being offered on Exoto’s website, but last weekend I received an email from them in regards to their promotion and I’m holding off for now. I want to see what other new 1:18 Ferraris that will come from Exoto before I give them my money to join, but I found my F500 #32 on ebay without the club crap from a private collector. It seems that Exoto is pushing out the online die cast re-sellers. Would anyone like to comment on this?

I find the whole club thing to be a joke. I understand that they are trying to improve their profit margin and all, but $300 or $500 for a club that you may not even get another Ferrari out of during the year. Atleast they could have done it as a $100 membership and offered their entire line for 25% less to club members including the Exoto Tifosi stuff.

I'm thinking about a 500F2 model. For my purposes, the choice seems to be CMC vs Exoto. I am inclined to Exoto because of the identification with a driver and racing numbers. I also like the flat-finish wheel spokes. I'd appreciate suggestions from owners of either or both.
Anybody have an explanation (a guess is OK) about why some F2's (e.g. Exoto) have 4 short exhausts and some (CMC) have the exhausts collected into a long pipe ? The easy ewxplanation is: 1952 = 4 short exhausts; 1953 = long exhaust. I think that is probably too simple-- I have seen pictures of a '53 with shorts. When I was racing Formula Ford, SIR (Seattle) forced us to put exhaust diffusers on to reduce noise. They also measured DB's at hidden places (sneaky, what ?). I found that my top speed, end of the long straight, was reduced but the lap times were nearly identical. I think that a little back-pressure might have improved low-speed torque. It may be that Ferrari used the long exhaust on short/twisty courses (more back-pressure) and short (open) stacks for the long courses. Any ideas ?
EBay seems to have several (as of 12/2013) of each. Prices seem to be in the $300 to $400 range.
    Thanks for your suggestions.

I went over my photo collection of the Ferrari 500F2's. The picture that I mentioned (1953 with 4 short exhaust stacks) was mislabeled. I should have caught it before posting. The photo is described as being from the British GP 1953. Ascari is sitting in a short-exhaust F2, number 15. I have another of Ascari in number 5 (long exhaust) at the British GP 1953. It seems that the number 15 is really at the 1953 Silverstone race. The mislabeled photo is currently for sale on eBay. It now seems that the 1952's had the short stacks and the 1953's had the long. Again, my apologies.

I've seen the CMC 500 F2 in person and I've got two Exoto 500s.

I chose the Exotos because of the flat-finish on the wheels and better stance (I thought the nose of the CMC sits too high).

One thing going for the CMC over the Exoto is that you can take off the rear body to expose the fuel tank and you can take off the wheels. So far I haven't been able to do these things with the Exoto (and I don't want to break anything!)

    bigodino,
You might take a look at the Exoto 500F2's on eBay. The 1952 Farina #28 with the blue and white nose stripe is shown with both front wheels off. Apparently it is possible to remove the fronts at least. Maybe some (brave) Exoto owner will let us know if he has done it. Maybe he has a one-inch knock-off hammer (?).

I just noticed that bigodino lives in the Netherlands. I am guessing US eBay isn't seen there. I'm attatching the eBay photo that I mentioned.

Thanks, I'll try it on my 500s. Anyone know if the rear cowl comes off as well, just like the CMC 500?

Well, the wheels do come off, but you have to be very careful as the knock-offs are screwed very tightly into the wheel axle.
