Ok. I will admit that I have never followed F1 very much until I purchased my 430. Even then it took years to become interested in the sport so that now I record and watch all the races, sometimes even the practice sessions. I may actually attend the event in Austin.

Now to the not so good part. The races themselves are rather boring. Monaco was a parade of single file cars. Many of the other events seem to follow suit. The guy on pole, usually Vettel goes on to a wire to wire win. Yes, I realized he qualified first so he was the fastest in practice so on race day he will be one of, if not the fastest guy on the racetrack. But race day usually brings out the best in their rivals, at least it did in motocross.

I watched and attended pro motocross and supercross events for years and the racing was much more exciting. I was an amateur racer back then.

Is Vettel such a superior driver over the others that he can open up a 2 second gap per lap on his cohorts or is his car that much more superior or both? How can you open up a 2 second gap on the first lap and then add to it each ensuing lap??

I read here that Alonso and Hamilton are better drivers than Vettel.

I am still watching and will continue but I wish the racing was a bit more intense. You know like the top guys really going at it for at least 5-6 laps out of 50 or so that they put in. This single file row of cars is getting a bit old. Now look at the general population here in the USA and see how they view it.

On a side note I watched Senna a few days ago and really enjoyed it.

    Someone please enlighten the rook.

Well.... I've been watching F-1 live since 1968... so I guess the sport has changed a lot over the years but it's never really been ultra exciting - or like NASCAR with all the lead changes etc... it's usually been one or two drivers have the upper hand and control all the winning. I think last year and 1982 were the years with the most winners... usually its one guy who runs away and hides:

    Ascari
    Fangio
    Moss
    Clark
    Stewart
    Lauda
    Prost
    Senna
    Schumacher
Vettle... these guys usually are the ones people think about as the best of the best, and when they were driving - they opend up leads and kept them...

Stewart won a race by minutes....

So for Vettle today - its a combo, car is good / great, but he clearly is the dominant driver. he has shown how driven he is with his move on Webber earlier this year, Alonso, Riakkonen etc... are in my book - good but but not in the same Vettle class... he and Schumacher are cut from the same cloth.

The cars are so much more reliable today - back in the 80-90's it was normal to have 4-10 retirements each race... + accidents ....

I dont subscribe that Americans cant develop a taste for F-1 - we have always had F-1 here.... its just not going to ever be as big as NASCAR in the USA - unless F-1 puts money into the marketing of the sport....

I can't explain it, I just enjoy watching it.

NASCAR on the other hand I find nothing enjoyable about it.

when you watch the race you're only seeing the tip of the iceberg.
f1 is so much more than just the race.
just the technology alone is fascinating.
add to that the personalities and mad skills of all the drivers and you've got something special.
attending a race weekend will help clarify things

Read a lot of the technical bulletins on F-1 websites. Those are great.
