Does anyone have a closeup picture and explanation of the buttons of the steering wheel on the F2004? I'm not sure when it was first used (could have been 2002, 2003 or this year), but I know it is significantly different to that of the F2001. I first saw a closeup of the F2004's steering wheel in the July edition of F1 Racing magazine. It's actually on the front cover, and the same photo is full page later in the magazine. It'd be great if someone knew of an article which showed the "evolution of Formula 1 steering wheels." Here's the F2001's steering wheel for comparison:
I found this link and the wheel looks the same, but there's some interesting text on steering wheel evolution. http://www.indiacar.com/index2.asp?pagename=http://www.indiacar.com/nfs/technical/steering.htm
Yea, the one at the bottom of that article is the same one I posted. I know it was on the F2001. What other years it was used I'm not sure; I don't know whether they change the steering wheel every year. The current wheel has a larger LCD and quite a few more buttons.
I had a look at some of my F1 videos and it appears the wheel posted in this thread hasn't been used since the 2001 season. I also have videos showing this wheel being used on the F1-2000 the year before. The Ferrari wheel currently in use was first introduced on the F2002, and from what I can see remains largely unchanged.
About a year ago in F1 Racing magazine had an article showing wheels from the 50's and each decade until now. Next page was a Ferrari F1 wheel with a description of every button.
I think it's interesting how intricate they've become in such a relatively short period of time. Only the last 8 years or so since they've been adding knobs and such. PLUS, when you see the steering column with the wheel removed, it's crazy to think all those system controls run down a 3/4 inch stem!
according to the book "FERRARI FORMULA 1" by David Bull Publishing on page 16, give the folowing explanations, starting in the upper right and going clockwise: white - brake balance/step front (moves ballance one step to front) red (L) - speed limiter pit lane yellow - radio M - mute red knob - active idle high button on lower right - scroll (scrolling og central LCD) yellow knob - active idle low top knob of middle pair/white - power steering bottom knob of middle pair/purple - recovery (driver can switch of electronic functions incase of failure button lower left - engine off blue knob - mixture green knob - brake ballance red (U) - under revs green (N) - neutral (selects neutral in gear box) white upper left - brake ballance/step rear (moves ballance one step to rear) hope this helps. I'll bet that most if not all functions and controls would be on all steering wheels (the one in the book is from 2000) althought the buttons and knobs might be in different places.
If you have that issue, would you be able to scan the article? Hopefully the Ferrari wheel they show and describe the buttons of isn't the same wheel from 2000/2001 that we've seen a million times!
See my earlier post on the topic, it's not the 2004 steering wheel but it describes the use of all the button very well. http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?p=67335287#post67335287 /Peter
Yep, i saw that when you posted it the first time. Also, that diagram and explanation is in the link posted earlier in this thread. Is that where you first found it?
No, I actually found it here => www.indiacar.com/nfs/technical/steering.htm scroll down a bit and you'll find the pic + diagram. // Peter
Ha, ha, ha, yeah, that's the same link... I found it during a Google search though. Must remember always to search the f-chat archives first... // Peter
Aha! Found a photo of the F2004's steering wheel. As you can see it's quite a bit more advanced than the one from 3 or 4 years ago.
