I just picked up a 580 ex II. At a glance, it appears fairly powerful... and worth the extra money, both for flash distance, and it's ability to control other slave flashes.

I'm curious what accessories others might recommend... if I get a flash stand(s) and umbrella, is a diffuser important, should external extra flashes only be hot flashes that are more powerful and less mobile?

I'm definitely excited. At a glance, in it's base automated mode, this thing throws out a lot of light!

What's the difference to the normal 580 EX?

I suck big time at using flash or just light in general :-/ :(

The extra stuff you mention is fine if you're planning to set up a studio, but not really necessary.

I get very good results with my flash (Nikon SB-600) just bouncing it off the ceiling or wall, or for fill as seen below.

It all comes down to what you're planning to use it for.

I'd like to be able to know how to use it in as many situations as possible... what will I use it for? Mostly, I suppose doing more event/social gatherings. I really need to read up on how to go through the menu's properly, and how to use the various functions. I used it a little doing some photos of products for Black Friday on our company website. Something about the in-flash metering is a bit better in low light. Obviously, the 580 EX is touted as great.

I thinking about a flash. What brand is a 580 EX?

I also don't have plans about changing :)

Maybe plans about adding one or two slaves instead.

I just need to get better at this flash thing.

You are right though. It's very powerful.

    My 2 cents
    Always wear a diffuser
Indoors always rotate head to rear 180 degrees
    Outdoors always use in sunlight
    Not in shade
Shoot in shutter priority at high speed
    Low iso

I don't know much about flash photography either, but that seems odd. I know using it in sunlight helps with fill, but not in shade is what I don't understand.

I have never used flash in shades (outside) *LOL*
But maybe it black out the background unless you give it full throttle and high ISO??

In shade let your camera do the work for you
Unless you have reflectors the beauty will be
    Natural light
Actually shade or cloudy is my favorite scenery
    No hot spots great resolution
1.4 to 2.8 f lenses live for this lighting
F is wide open and shutter speeds are moderate
Reso or iso can be 100 or less
    All ideal conditions
Yes if background is bright you need flash
