I don't know if the following is already known, but here are the basic specs for the new "Formula Electric" (or whatever it is being called) which the FIA plans to start in 2013:

    • No limitation on the number of traction motors, 4wd is possible
    • Mass of the rolling chassis at least 540kg
    • Battery mass max. 300kg
    • Total vehicle mass at least 780kg
    • No limitations on aerodynamics
    • No limitations on the body
    • Variable aerodynamics are allowed, actuated by the driver
    • Safety cell on Formula 1 level
    • Race length 15-20min with plans to increase this number when technology advances

    Sounds pretty good to me!

Anything that keeps electric motors out of the real F1 is fine by me.

As long as it doesn't replace good old F1, then bring on the remote control cars.

It could be a cool support series, but it will air on Speed a week after the race in the middle of the night, so...

Interesting. I wonder how much coverage this series will get?

I also wonder how the inevitable will end up happening... will this series merge with F1, or replace it and be renamed F1, or once E-F1 cars prove faster, will there be a gradual rule change which effectively changes F1 into E-F1.

The next 20 years will be very interesting.

After a couple of years it will be cancelled for lack of interest.

If things remain the same, yes. BUT, if the rules continue to be progressive (rather than the often regressive rules of F1), then this new series will be fresh and exciting. F1 would be stale and antiquated by comparison.

We used to make jokes about racing in 2035. "Wow, that was so quiet, what a great car...did you hear the sound of those brakes rubbing" F1 as usual is way behind sportscars when it comes to this new idea, but this scares me. BORING!!!

Way behind those overly controlled, fuel monitoring, ballasted, restricted sports cars you mean? :)

Leaving that aside, and given that it's *never* (at least in my lifespan) gonna "replace" F1, I reckon it's a great idea - An electric motor on each wheel, unlimited electronic wizadry and pushing battery technology seems like a good thing to me. They may even be fast for a brief time..... ;) And, another way to keep the eco-mentalists at bay. ;)

8 hour pit stops OTOH are gonna really suck!.....

    Cheers,
    Ian

Formula Electric may not end up being the series that we watch in the future, but at some point, gas powered cars are going to go away. I would guesstimate that inside of 30 years, gas cars will be the anomaly compared to electrics.

And if F1 is going to be leading in technology, it will happen there too.

The good news is that electric cars are a true performance-oriented car guy's wet dream.

So, do the re-fueling pitstops take six or seven hours?... Maybe to have a little bit longer race they could do a 2-car team relay or something. I'm just glad its a seperate deal.....
