    Hi Guys.
I have had a problem with my 355 fuel gauge for a while and traced it to a faulty fuel tank sender - then found out the OE item is no longer available. I have designed and commissioned a sensor specialist to manufacture an exact replacement for the original using 21st century technology. I now have stock of these which fit 348 and 355 for Worldwide delivery, it is a simple swap includes a new gasket seal and correct wiring plug. I believe the design can also be adapted to fit other models such as 288, Mondial, Testarossa etc, I would just need your faulty unit for a pattern for this.

Please message me for more info on either option.

    Many thanks, Brian.

I have just 5 left from the 1st batch, they have sold pretty much to all 4 corners of the World. Thank you to all who have purchased them so far and look forward to reading your reviews on here and other forums. Also the special budget removal and fitting tool are proving popular.
I will have plenty more senders arriving in around 2 weeks - please message me for more info.
    Thanks. Brian

Hi Lance, thanks for your enquiry.
The sender costs £160 (around $208) or £200 ($260) with the tool and Worldwide delivery is £25 ($33). If you send me your email address I will send a PayPal invoice, 'the safer way to pay online' and once paid I will get one sent out Royal Mail which takes around 7 days to reach you,
Is it for 348 or 355 as the fittings are slightly different and do you want the fitting tool also?
    Many thanks, Brian.

Brian that is awesome that you developed this part to help those that are finding these parts are NLA. Be sure to put it into the 348-355 sticky for parts. Thanks for your offer.

my fuel gauge sits on full empty, is this a sign of a bad fuel sender? Also, whats involved in fitting a new sender? does the fuel tank need to be removed?

Hi Darren. 99% certain it is the tank sender, the gauge never appears to play up but the sender has a limited life span and was a poor design. Fairly straightforward to replace, should take around 30 minutes if you purchase the tool also and all done from under the car. Just need to know if it is 348 or 355 as fitting parts are slightly different.
If you wish to order one, I need an email address and I can send a PayPal invoice which you can pay online and it will be dispatched same day. I would suggest we use a courier rather than normal mail service as it is desperately slower since Covid - I have heard stories of 6 or even 9 WEEKS to Oz!
£160 for the sender or £200 for sender with fitting tool and courier shipping around £30 but I will find a firm price.

Do you have a fuel warning light?

No fuel warning light, just the needle on the gauge not moving from full empty. ive had this problem before, but it resolves after a few petrol stops. this time, it hasnt resolved itself yet.

Very strange. If there was no warning light, and the fuel gauge is showing empty, I would have thought that:

    1) (if there was plenty of fuel in the tank) that the gauge was faulty and that the sender and the damper module were ok ... or
    2) (if there was low fuel in the tank) that the damper module was faulty and not producing fuel indications or a low quantity warning.

However, if it is resolving itself after a fuel petrol stops, it could be a sender issue. Maybe there is a short in the sender at a specific height and it's overloading the damper module and it's unable to produce any output to the gauge or the light.

I don't know if you were aware, but the F355 has a damper module which not only stops the gauge needle bouncing up and down during car acceleration, but also uses low fuel quantity values to put on the light.

You could do voltage and resistance checks on the system, but the wiring and components are a little hard to get to. The damper module is mounted on the back of the passenger footwell relay panel and the main interface plug between the sender and the damper module is behind the carpeted saddle forward of the centre console. Whatever you do, it's going to take some effort/expense to fix.

Anyway, I should probably start a different thread if you want to attempt to do some diagnostic work.

It’s great when owners look for and find solutions for parts that are either no longer made or ridiculously expensive. Great job Brian.

I would say that is conclusive that it is the sender which is faulty. The low level light relies on the resistance reading from the sender as does the gauge, so indicates the sender has gone down. I notice a couple of companies are listing the genuine part at around £1500! I am 100% certain our's is more accurate than the original!

Not sure I follow you. A broken sender must show a resistance of some kind (from zero to infinity). Normally a gauge will go to its endstops at the extremes of resistance. Wouldn't the lamp circuit similarly see an open circuit (infinity) or perhaps a short circuit(zero) as a low fuel level and illuminate the light?

Is the damper circuit smart enough to recognise a fault? i.e. something out of the normal range will make it produce no output at all.

A broken sender would almost certainly be open circuit so no resistance.

A fairly simple test is to remove the full width panel underneath the car covering the fuel tank. The sender is located in front of the rear wheel on the right side. Jump a wire between the Yellow and Black wires at the 3 pin plug - the gauge should go to full, if it does it is the tank sender which is faulty.

Thanks, I wasn't sure if it was low or high.

So from this, I would expect the gauge to read low and the light to come on if there was a high or open circuit.

From a design(er) point of view I would want a (really smart) damper unit to put the light on if there was an extreme reading at both ends of the scale.

Anyway, what Darren decides to do next depends on the tools he has available, his time and his budget. As I've mentioned to you earlier, even though the UK/Australia exchange rate is pretty poor at the moment, I'm going to buy one of your senders as an investment. I'd buy a damper unit, too, just to see how it works, but it is also hard to find and it looks like the second hand retailers have jacked up the prices accordingly.

Darren, have you confirmed that your warning light bulb works?

Almost certainly I will use couriers for future deliveries to Oz and US (and maybe some others) as the normal mail service is taking an age with the Covid 19 delays.
