New Garmin G2000 touch panel technology

    I have a G1000 panel and am intrigued with the new touchscreen technology in the G2000 panel.

    Do you think touchscreen is the way to go in a small plane?

    I have some touchscreen displays in some of my cars, e.g. Lexus.
    It can be little difficult to work precisely while driving or on a bumpy road.

    Is a touch panel going to work okay in light chop in a plane?

    If they offered the G2000 as an upgrade I'd get it. I also have a G1000 in my 2008 Bonanza. I hate that my Ipad running WingX is more high tech. G1000 is 2005 tech.

    Yes, touch screen is perfect for our planes. A hell of a lot better than having to turn that damn knob!!

    Lol, on the use of the knob.
    I have a bad habit of not hitting ENT twice after doing data entry and having to start over.
    The knobs are not intuitive, for sure.

    The nice thing about the G2000 is it's intuitive. It pulls up your most commonly used frequencies automatically so you just select it by touching it. On a cross country IFR this would be great. It automatically brings up the most common frequencies so you just touch the one ATC says to use.

    When you are in the junk and bouncing around I'd much rather have knobs that I can get my hands on, feel and turn the required amount.

    JMHO but I don't think touch screens have any place in a light single engine airplane. I don't see how you can use it properly without taking your eyes off of the instruments, and that's ok if you are on autopilot, but if you aren't I think it's more dangerous for single pilot ops... Touch screens are, again IMO, a lot like BMW's I drive, or should I describe it as "I drive while you diddle with the radio because I want to keep my eyes on the road". Just as with I Drive, if you have to divert your attention from the primary task (flying the airplane) to running a computer, you are taking your attention from where it needs to be. To me I want to KNOW where each control is and how it works and have tactile feedback that I am minipulating the control, and I don't see how a touch screen provides that.

    Maybe in something with higher wing loading like a twin, but when you set a landing speed of 62kts, you don't have a high wing loading and you are going to get bounced around. Call me old fashioned, but there are some things that appear to be improvements that aren't.

    I don't see how a knob keeps my eyes on the instruments. I always have to look away to dial in a frequency or destination. It's a PITA.

    There's more to the touch screens than touch screens. It's intuitive so you don't have to dial anything in. It's already there. Kinda like shooting an approach with the G1000, I don't have to dial it in, it's already there. With the G2000 it's like that for everything.
