Thanks for your indulgence. Not Ferrari related but a Texas question. I've just moved to Houston and my 2 dogs will be joining me in a few weeks. In Colorado, fleas are not really an issue due to temps/low moisture. How do Texans effectively prevent fleas on their indoor/outdoor dogs? I know there's tons of treatments, collars, etc. I'd like to hear from dog owners what actually works from their experience.

    Thanks!
    Rick

We have used Frontline on our yorkies for nearly 13 years. Never an issue with fleas.

    We buy it at Costco.

    Flea collars are useless.

Yeah, just saw the Frontline treatment. Topical between shoulder blades. Once a month I'm guessing...

We use the topical treatment between the shoulder blades.

I'm cheap and our dogs weigh about as much as a can of beer, so we cut the dose in half and apply about every six weeks or so. Its not an exact science in our house.

To be fair, I have one Yorkie that walks the long way everywhere just so he doesn't have to walk on the grass, so you can probably figure out that they don't spend much time outside. Still, never an issue with fleas or bugs of any kind.

If you have an infestation in your yard, have a pest control company treat the yard periodically in addition to using Frontline.

Frontline works for normal instances; you live in the city and minimal other critter contact.
If you live in the country then Comfortis (prescription) will handle it.

My dog is an indoor dog, isn't outside more than an hour a day. He's never had a flea and we don't use anything on him. 11 years and counting.

Don't forget about heart worm prevention.

It can kill your dogs if left untreated and it is very expensive to cure.

    Very important.
