New Host For USGP?

I voted for Vegas on the Strip, although technically I think that is not going to happen: Most likely candidate for a USGP09 (forget next year) will be Las Vegas in the streets like Champ Cars this spring.

I love that proposal for a track near Orlando. That could actually work because Orlando has an equally high touristic appeal to Europeans as does Las Vegas but with the added benefit of less travel time.

Personally I could always find as many good reasons to go to Orlando as to Las Vegas. I can never get enough of theme parks.

 

Would be cool. They already run a cup car oval there.

Mickey Mouse is about the size of Bernie, they should get along just fine.

 

The IRL's first race was on a make**** parking lot oval at Disney World and was called the Disney 200.

 

I think everyone can forget about Las Vegas. The casinos may have the money, but they are not going to spend any of it for something that is going to keep people out of them. It was a fight to get the city to agree to spend the money it took to repave the streets that were used for the Champ Car race. The downtown casinos are still complaining about how the race limited the access to the casinos the three days they ran. We had no fireworks on New Years of 2000 because the casinos didn't want anything that would drow the people outside.

The cost of the track aside, who is going to put up the BIG dollars that Bernie extorts from the organizers? Indy holds enough people to keep the ticket prices down. There would not be a place here to hold that many people, so prices will go up to European standards. I paid $375 in 1995 for my ticket to Monza. I can't see that many people will to pay that here. Indy drew a great crowd in 2000 because there where a lot of people, especially 500 fans, who wanted to see what the bid deal was. Most I talked to said they wouldn't be back.

Another problem with Vegas is the schedule. Canada and Las Vegas have a little diffrence in weather. If the race would have been in Vegas this year it would have been about 110 degrees. I don't think Canada would want to give up its date, and there wouldn't be much of a chance of doing North America twice like they did in 2000. But I could be wrong.

 

I guess you'll have to add an oval to get NASCAR to come through the city. I don't think they're crazy about adding another road course. The drivers don't like the two stops (iirc) they make a year to road courses. What would be the incentive for NASCAR? $$$?

 

Cancun

 

It wasn't a problem during all the years we did not have a USGP in the 90's.

I hope everyone realizes that most of these new circuits, mostly in Asia, are paid for by the governments of those countries.

If TG and Indy could not make it work, I don't see how anywhere else can, that's the problem. As I keep saying, I don't care for TG, but he put an awful lot of money into Indy and the event, and he knew when to say when.

 

You may all laugh, but after this years Detroit GP it may be the place that is best set up to host F1. They have hosted the MLB Allstar game, the Superbowl, and the upcoming Final Four in the last three years. As far as money, Penske is the one behind the new race. I'll get my nomex suit on, now.

Barber would be a good track for the drivers.....everything else sucks but the track would make for good racing.

 

Road America and then Road Atlanta

 

cancun was supposed to join the calendar a couple of years ago buy i think they ran into some track issues the area just wasn't working or something. I definitely think a Cancun race, in addition to a las vegas nighttime street race, would be great.

 

The Cancun track looks boring imo. I think the project is cancelled anyway.

What I'm saying is Penske won't do ANYTHING in ANY venture unless he is 'guaranteed' to MAKE MONEY.

I just don't see what he can do that TG didn't.

 

I don't know. He spent a lot of time on the Superbowl, and as far as I know, he had no business interest in it. Same with the Detroit GP. Sure, he has a team in the series, but what benefit does he receive by having them race in Detroit. He seems genuinely interested in trying to boost Detroit's ailing economy by bringing events and getting various leaders to cooperate for the greater good.

Frank Williams made an interesting comment in the Euro GP pre race show: He said there is a chance that "within the next couple of months somebody might pull a rabbit out of the hat" in regards to the USGP 08. He mentioned Las Vegas or some other place. Does he know something we don't?

There isn't much time until USGP08 but if they'd base it on the CHAMP race in Las Vegas this spring, it might just work.

 

Roger has two teams running Labor Day weekend at Belle Isle - his Porsche Spyders on Saturday's ALMS race and his IRL team on Sunday. He's been doing quite a bit of upgrading at Belle Isle.

Word about town is that the infield section of the Indy Speedway, being reconfigured for MotoGP 08, would be the course available should F1 return to Indy.

 

...As I have predicted.

 

I remember that back in 2000 when the track was built there were several plans for changes depending on the success of the event, one even had a cross over. Based on a number of events, I can see why they did not commit to a major reconstruction earlier, but this layout was obviously in the works for the 08 bikes. Note the direction of travel. If used in the same manner for cars, my precious stand H might not be the best seat any longer.
