I don’t have the keys to the GTS and the steering lock is on ! can I get keys cut from the key code? Where do I find the key code? thanks
You can remove the lock with one screw in the back. Sometimes you need to dremel a slot for a screwdriver to fit. You can PM me and I can tell you more.
Thank you, I am not to worried about the steering lock currently as I plan to strip the car completely. I was hoping just to get a new set from somewhere based on the key code, save me re-keying all barrels
Here is some interesting info from the VW Samba website about Neiman ignition key numbers and locks that may help. I would think a seasoned locksmith could make a key and if the Samba article is correct you could even determine the correct key code: Samba thread: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=9765181 So I have been doing a little research on steering locks with no key, or a messed up key. I have figured out a couple things. First, a good locksmith can make a key by impressioning. They don't need anything other than their skills, and they don't have to take the lock apart. You can google it to find out how they do it. Next, the number on steering lock keys is the direct code to the depth of the cut for the five grooves. This is the five digit number on the key that ends with an A. The first digit is the closest to the key ring, the last digit is the furthest inside the lock. 1 is the deepest cut, and 5 is no cut. This info is from the VW key code book. The number is only located on the key, nowhere on the lock. The depth of the key cuts for the XXXXXA keys are: xxxxxA series locks Code Depth (in) Depth (mm) 1 0.216 5.4 2 0.236 5.9 3 0.256 6.4 4 0.276 6.9 5 0.291 7.25 The angle of the cut is supposed to be 110 degrees I don't have the spacing info shoulder to center of first cut and cut to cut. If you have a key or a cylinder, you can measure the cut to cut spacing and make an educated guess on the shoulder to first cut spacings...
With the greatest respect and being new to this forum you need start a thread on "my resto" & provide more info about what you are doing and why before asking for key codes to ignition that is locked. Getting keys cut is the last of your worries on a full resto job.........please dont take offence and hope you can see the point i am making! Best Regards Tony
I had this problem a few years back (based in London) with the car stuck in an underground car park. A classic Ferrari specialist - Rardley recommended these guys - Fortress Security I think based in Surrey (tel 01483 761670) who specialise in locks for classic cars. A guy called Chris came out and was able to make a duplicate key from the lock. Was very impressive! This was however over 5 years ago.
Thank you to everyone’s help so far. this is not my first restoration I have restored 2 early 911s in a lot worse state than this GTS I have removed the door lock and my plan is to remove the barrel and take it to a local specialist to make a key ! The next question is are the 2 holes on the barrel holder one way pins that I need to drill out or is it one pin I need to drift through??
