My dad Looked at the new M6 coupe the other day, color is Sahkir Orange( Launch car). For $125k sticker, the car is a good buy considering what it competes with. He also looked at the 997 Carrera S, but for $120k( Fully loaded) he could not justify paying that much for the Carrera S, when my 997.1 turbo was $134k. A 997.2 turbo is at least $150k and in that price range there are other options. Any other cars he should consider within this price range? He is really interested in the BMW M6, but I want him to look at some other cars before he makes his final decision.

Porsches have never been bargains, but I can't imagine splashing out six figures for a BMW 6 series.

The 991 is the car to have in the $100K-$200K range. If $120K is too much, just cut back the options, which are stupidly expensive.

Second choice would be the Audi R8, but that's a different type of car -- not everyone wants mid-engined and low.

The only other contender is the AM Vantage -- gorgeous but the depreciation, dealer network and potential reliability issues would send me back to the Porsche dealer.

991 S and XKR-S are very tough to beat. Test drive them both. All I've heard about the M6 is that it's somewhat disappointing. All I've heard about the "new" (2006+) XK series is that everyone is always positively surprised, so don't ignore it!

V8 Vantages are far better in terms of reliability than any other Aston made. The new ones should have all issues sorted out.

With the engine issues of 996, in some parts 997 and the Cayman, the flawless quality days of Porsche are over. Still good, but kind of like Mercedes, the impeccable over engineering is gone.

Does it have to be new?

In that price range is the Merc SL63 and even a few F430s and F430 Spiders approaching the $120s used. Does he want more of a sports car (F430, R8, etc) or a sporty car (SL, Jag, etc). Could also get a Bentley Continental in that price range, or a Gallardo, or a Maserati Granturismo.

He wants something that he can drive everyday. He is thinking of a used Bentley and possibly an R8( But really cant drive it everyday). We are going to the Porsche dealership again to look at a couple of used 2011 Turbo and the Carrera S again. I will keep you guys posted.

Drive the XKRS you will want one if you do. It performs as well as a DBS sounds amazing and it very comfortable.I am just waiting for a year and then I'm grabbing one. Price should be arouns 80K by then. As far as Porsche's go tell your dad the days of inexpensive 911's are long gone. I expect the new turbo to be 200K. I had a 07 M6 and you would have to be insane to pay 125k for that fat pig.

You'll take a huge depreciation hit with the M6.

Here is an update: He went back and looked at the M6 again, plus he looked at the new SL 550. Loves the Sl550, but only has two seats. Didn't make it to Porsche dealership, but will be going tonight. I will also have him look at the Jaguar, based on what a few of you are saying here, its worth taking a look at it.

Lightly used CLK Black Series or what about an Audi S7? CLS 63 AMG? Just throwing some different ideas out there.

I have to second (or is it third?) the 991S. I drove one with the 7 speed manual and, while not as engaging as the new Boxster S I drove right before it, I found it to be an incredibly well composed, comfortable, and capable car. It was a green car, so I treated it respectfully, but it is certainly fast and well balanced. If I were able to do it, I'd drop the $116K sticker price on that before just about anything else in that price range. Except for a CS, but that's a whole 'nother animal :)

You said the magic word back seats, none of the cars mentioned here can put a full grown human in the back seats. Back seats cars would be Mercedes CL or a Gran Turismo, or a Bentley GT.

Congrats, I think the 991 convertible top is the best Porsche has done. Until this model I always thought the coupes looked better.

I have to admit that after 6000 mile in 2 1/2 months, my 991s w/7mt is the best daily driver I have ever owned.

I hadn't weighed in yet. I'm about to place my order for the M6 conv. It has to be something good to get me out of the 599 I've got now. Now you guys got me thinking.

I've had great years with Bimmers. Most recently seven years in an '01 M5.

I also thought it had a useable back seat. You guys are saying tennis racquet and I don't play tennis.

The M6 backseat is bigger than the 991, but not by much and certainly not big enough for an adult over 5' 5" or so to spend more than a few minutes in. If I were looking for a daily driver convertible and needed a usable back seat, I will consider an Audi S5, or RS5 if Audi decides to make in in a cabriolet, or the Maserati Grancabrio which has a surprisingly big back seat.

Okay, so after test driving many cars such as the 991 Carrera S, Jaguar XK-R, SL 550 and the R8 V8, he did not test drive the M6. He decided on buying an SL 550. Even though its a two seater, the car does and has everything he wants. Its comfortable, fast, classy and fun to drive. So he has order a white on black, I will post pictures once it arrives. Thanks for everyone's advice.
