Hello! Long time lurker, first time poster.

Since I drove a 458 before a combat deployment in 2017, one has been my goal. Finally getting to a point where I can possibly afford one, so figured I would learn as much as possible! Last cars were an E39 M5 then 2009 997.1 6MT Turbo.

I’ve seen posts about operating cost, and honestly I could see myself driving it 3-7k miles a year. The turbo was my second car with my truck as primary and 2 motorcycles I used mainly, still managed to put 10k miles on it a year! As a pilot, I’ll have less time than I used to but still.

With that being said, those kinds of miles being driven what kind of annual operating cost should I assume?

lastly, if anyone is considering selling one in the next year that’s modified with a visceral exhaust/tune/maybe suspension then let’s start a conversation! Especially if it’s any of the pretty “reds” or Nero with the saddle or black/red stitching interior and clear bra!

Fun times, finally ready to shop for a long-awaited joy!

first thought, you’ll find that the great majority of available cars won’t have many mods, so shop for value, good history, and the color and options you like as the targets, and add the mods you like if they’re missing.

as far as operating costs, basic maintenance looks around 1500-2500 at a dealer depending on minimal annual or medium biannual. But as a newer owner myself , I find it impossible to project ownership costs due to not knowing if it will be trouble-free next year and only the costs above, or have anything between $1k -20k for an unexpected repair around the next corner.

My 458 has been reliable and nothing outside of the normal oil and brake fluid changes, tires, etc. My local Porsche dealer is happy to do the oil/filter changes each year so a trip out of town every 2-3 years for the other services are really not a huge deal. Love the car. One of the all time greats IMO.

When shopping don’t go for the car that is the best “deal”. Even if it cost you $10-$30k more, get the car you want. The spec is super important and you don’t want to spend this kind of money and miss having the color or options you want.

Be patient and watch the market. Be ready to jump on one that really has everything you want even if it’s not the smoking deal some of the others are.

I just went through this with a 991.2 GT3. Wanted a manual, PTS, Sofas, and a LOT of the luxury options. Took forever but finally got what I was looking for.

First, Thank you for your service- And that's not a platitude- There are MANY veterans and active duty folks on here- Second, typical advice you will hear- Non-modded car- do with it what you want once you own it but don't buy someone else's experimentation- Buy a car with solid maintenance history- worry less about miles and more about maintenance history- I've had my 458 Spider since 2019- Minimal issues- Minimal maintenance costs- Good luck with the search- if you find something in Colorado I'm happy to check it out for you- Cheers

    Gents thanks for the info!

Shorn, first off, it was a pleasure to serve and I got to fly really cool helicopters plus get all my ratings for the airlines paid for! The only thing I will say is that my Turbo was HEAVILY modified, with perfect maintenance and records. It was even tracked! I bought it at 60k miles, sold it at 90k with the only issue being the clutch slave which is very common. The new owner has put 15k miles on it in the 2 years since I sold it and no issues either. You buy not only the car, but more importantly, the previous owner. The reason why I want one with mods is because that is generally where the deals potentially come from, since no one wants a modded vehicle, even if it's just an exhaust and springs. Wouldn't hurt if they gave a little military discount haha. I mod every vehicle I own, keep meticulous records in binders for each car/truck/motorcycle with receipts. I wouldn't buy a car unless I saw similar.

The search is on! I may buy a 997 Turbo in the interim again since that market is very rapidly softening according to pcarmarketplace and BaT.

The military is the employer of last resort for many, many people.

That is true! Luckily I was given the opportunity to not only serve my nation, but go to one of the best schools in the world, as well as learn how to fly massive warplanes. Not a bad way to live I’d think. The airlines will be a nice reprieve for sure.

They told me at the recruiting center that with my test scores, I could fly jets, be a submariner, electronics, nuclear, etc. I took the physical and failed five color blind tests. At that point they said I basically couldn't do anything that required a brain. I just had to get away from an awful home situation, so I went in anyway. Started at the absolute bottom. Made it to E5 by the end of my four years as a welder/firefighter/safety guy. A few years later I received my bachelors as well as my masters degree in computer science and have been writing high tech software for over 30 years. But I was proud to serve.

It's a means to an end! Used it to get my degree, and my ratings for aviation for similar personal reasons.

Most modded cars are put back to stock and the aftermarket parts sold separately so the buy the clean car not someone else's headache is kinda hard to do or know for sure what you are getting. I would have bought my car with a few mods and save the time doing it after I bought it. There isn't a lot of mods for the 458 as far as performance but body kits kill the value and some are just awful.

Prioritize your wants and when the check box's fill up enough you need to make the deal asap as cars with high option lists sell really fast.

If you can get a good records history and do a PPI you should be ok for the most part.

Are you looking for private party only or are you open to paying a little extra through a dealer or consigner?

Would prefer private party. I have sold my motorcycles and car, well now a plane also, private party. I provide a very detailed history, as well as a deal in most cases. That karma has always come back in good form for me when I have searched for something, just requires patience.

The only "performance" I would like is a visceral, earth shattering exhaust, and maybe a tune for that 2010 sound and crisp response.

Lots of good exhausts for the 458 just depends on what your taste is.

I went with iPE 200 cel valved exhaust, and Fabspeed headers and beyond happy with the set up. Also got a tune or more accurately 4 different maps to choose from.
Did have some melting of rubber lines from the headers but a little heat wrap solved that.

First off, thank you for your service! My G-Father was in WW2 and my Father in Nam, so much respect for you.
Overall, they are reliable, and you have the yearly maintenance costs of a grand or so a year and the bigger service every 2 years / $2k plus. Other than that, typical wear and tear, which you shouldn't have a lot of. Maybe you need to replace the tires, all depends on the year they were installed vs current tread life.
HOWEVER, the Achilles heel of the 458 is the transmission, in which mine was wasted w/ only 6k on the clock! Thank God I took the power warranty, which covered a $40k replacement. It would behoove you to take a warranty for a least one year, to cover any unknowns. Then you decide from there....
