Just saw this kit coming in 2022 on newstands and joining the 1/8th 250 GTO they are also doing. Unless you live in Italy you can only get the parts on ebay.

Aardy is correct, rear body shape is wrong. Substantial shape problem, which will take a huge amount of work to reshape. Also just from taking a brief look at things... the hood scoop is not the exact shape. The two little front lights were never on the LM winner 0008M, but they were on the sister car with race #23, S/N 0010M, but that car did not have the center light in front of the grill. Engine... overall very good, but the airbox on top of the carburetors is not quite the correct shape.; gear shift knob is wrong. From what very little I can see of the reserve oil tank in front of passenger seat, that also looks too small, and wrong in some of its shape. Would be nice to have sidewall lettering on the tires, but Hiro seems to always omit this on their vintage car kits. I wonder if they put any of the underside detail - framework, etc. on the hood & trunk panels, and the interior?

I will say one thing, the 1/12th Hiro 166MM looks better than I thought it would. Several errors that need to be corrected but overall the photos look pretty good. I think a cut just below the rear boot line at a slight angle taking out 1/2 a mm might correct the too horizontal that Aardy and Marshall pointed out

I received the 1/12th 166MM kit yesterday and must say it is one of Hiro's best Ferrari kits in 1/12th scale. The rear end problem is partly caused by the construction of the kit body with the rear end hanging off a brace that pushes it up. Body is in two pieces, front and rear sections(will supply photo soon). The engine cover scoop is slightly too square but it looks like it can be sanded rounder to the correct and make perfect. The scoop might be slightly to narrow as it goes towards the windshield I also noticed. The body shape otherwise is very good IMO with some minor corrections needed. The rear bracing that holds up the rear bodywork will have to be adjusted so that the boot and rear end sit at more of an angle. This one is a must buy IMO if you love 1/12th scale.

By the way, I paid $624.00 including shipping and tax direct from Hiro for the 166MM, and I received it 2 days after it was releases in Japan.

What's missing or not correct on the Hiro 1/12th 166MM kit?

Inside hood and trunk structural bracing as usual.
    Stampings on the wheel spinners.
    Air intake is not correct.
Hood scoop to square and not wide enough towards windshield.
Rear end sticks up to much due to model bracing pushing it up. Also the fender crease on both sides goes almost straight down at the direct from rear view but should curve more.

Will find more, but still a very nice kit. They also did put sidewall writing on the tires!!!! And it looks correct, with large Englebert lettering.

Thanks for the info Tom. Interesting to read. Well, 30 years ago when I had my 1:14 Barchetta models made (a few people were working for me and doing some of the research) we had the shapes correct for body and various parts, engraved Borrani logo on the wheel spinners, inside hood & trunk framework, and we were able to cast the body all in one piece; of course doors, hood & trunk panels were separate. As for the tire sidewall lettering, well we got that one wrong... we made Pirelli Corsa tires, which someone told us were correct, but they were not. My Aston Martin DB3S and 166 Barchetta projects both taught me a lot about the need to do really good and very thorough research, and not to rely on anyone but myself, and not to deal with or listen to any of the "arm-chair experts" I had dealt with in the very early days. Same today, I'll look at any new information someone may suggest or say is right, but... I always verify myself! I've found that most often, unless it's from an acknowledged expert in the particular field, the info most people think is right is actually wrong. Even with my "learning curve - on the job training!" in the early days of CMA, I think we did a great job of producing some terrific models. My research efforts today are so much better, and so very involved, takes a huge amount of time to do it right. Certainly if I were to produce a Barchetta model today, I would correct everything, including some little detail bits. Nonetheless, I am glad to see that even after 30 years...my Barchetta's are still very accurate and and still sought after by collectors. By the way... I think you you have a great eye, better than most! And if I was ever going to make a Carrera Panamericana race car...YOU would be the First person I would go to and rely on!

Thank you Marshall for the kind words. I have learned from my mistakes along with other's mistakes, that is who I try to have no bias be it a slot car body, diecast or model kit. Whoever does the best body shape and model in the scale I like that is the model I want.

On the 166MM, I wish Hiro would take outside advise, it would really help them. They have alot of pride I guess. But his latest Ferrari offerings in 1/12th have been top quality IMO. He has fixed most of the major issues we had with their kits but probably doesn't even realize they made other mistakes like framework under the engine covers and spinner detail. They seem to be up to the task 90% of the time but then miss key details, making me think they don't know they missed them?? By the way, I have to say I always thought you set the bar for high quality models along with other greats like the MiniDelta team and now the English/Chinese and Japanese teams. I am very happy other companies have come up offering almost as good quality models now. New technology has really brought up the quality allowing amazing models to be developed and made. The sky is the limit it seems.

Have a Merry Christmas and enjoy the warm weather...Sorry no white Christmas this year.

Tom, you're welcome, and thank you too. And I also have to give a big thank you, to you for this entire "New Model Kit Thread." You have posted/provided so much great information over the years, and it has truly been a help to me, and I think most everyone else. So keep up the great work, and Merry Christmas to you as well.

Oh... and I'm OK with the warm weather... snow looks good on postcards, but not in my looooong driveway. :D

Not a Ferrari model, but a tribute to the art of making a model automobile. A '59 Cadillac in this case.
