Rumors saying it coming out on Sept. 7th to take the place of the D80. Price is $1300 with the new 18-105mm lens. Supposedly it will be 12MP, Live view, video recording, GPS and HDMI. The video recording seems like a stretch but this seems like a good deal to me, might be what I need to step-up from my D40 without having to drop $1800 on a D300.

I suppose if you want to wait a month after it is first made available, probably two months after it is announced it would be a good idea. IMO D40 to D80 or D90 is not a big step up. I know my next camera body will be two steps up from my D80, but first I will buy the pro lenses. Which brings me to this, what lenses do you have? If those specs are important to you (they aren't confirmed yet) then you may want to think about it. D300 is $1625 at B+H and Adorama, but I see your point.
    Thanks

I have a 70-300mm VR which is as good a long-range lens as I am going to get unless I spend $1800 on the 70-200mm, which I don't have money or use for. Then I have the kit 18-55mm which is great but the 18-105mm would be much nicer with VR and a longer range. Really it is going to come down to about $900 for the body which is almost half of a D300.

Whatever helps you make pictures easier is what to get. Personally I would get the 70-200 VR instead of the D90 and kit lens, but I shoot mostly in that range. I do like my 70-300 Vr also :)
    Thanks

Why? If they can do live view, they can do video.

Of course, it will have to substantially diminish the resolution. 12MP video would fill a card faster than I can say act---

(I believe live view uses a secondary sensor of much lower resolution anyway, and that's probably what they'd use).

I heard it would only be for 5 minutes to prevent the sensor from overheating.

I'm really curious how the Canon 50D stands up to the D300. Should be an interesting year.

I was hoping for maybe 6 FPS otherwise I would probably get this one, but I keep going back to the D300. What do you guys think of the lens, I might get it to replace my 18-55mm kit lens.

Nice camera. The optional GPS feature seems a little excessive. Does it brew coffee also?

Even if it did brew coffee it doesn't mean you have to. People should appreciate that they have the option of using new things even if they don't think they will use them.
    Thanks
