Who wants to be the first to pose next to one of these sleds? Or, should I say: who wants to be the first to be ticketed by one of these sleds :)

    NYPD's new muscle car
    is the wheel deal

The 14 new vehicles are Dodge Chargers and cost $28,511 per car.
Forget about Boss Hogg: The NYPD is taking a page from "The Dukes of Hazzard" in picking the speedy police car of the future.

The Police Department is testing new Dodge Chargers, with 5.7-liter engines, that can hit up to 150 mph. The Duke Boys' General Lee also was a Dodge Charger - albeit the 1969 edition of the muscle car.

"Technically, these cars are symbolic of where we are today" in crime fighting, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said yesterday.

The department's 3,000-plus fleet is now dominated by Ford Crown Victorias and Chevy Impalas.

Kelly said the NYPD is trying to diversify its fleet. "If you only have one or two makes and there's a recall, it can really cause problems," he said.

Dodge is charging the city $28,511 per car.

"This is the last car I'm introducing to the NYPD," said Leonard Lesko, director of NYPD Fleet Services, who is retiring in November. "The first car I brought in was the 1972 black, green and white Plymouth Fury with no power steering or air conditioning.

    "We've come a long way."

    Yesterday I noticed a couple things in Franklin Lakes NJ;

    1) A new police car with the low profile roof lights painted in the town's paint scheme
    2) A new police car with no roof lights...but fully painted & marked in the town's paint scheme
    3) a guy in casual clothes riding a white motorcycle....and then I read "Police" on the side of the bike
    4) This morning, a guy who looked like he just rolled out of bed riding a white motorcycle, but again with the word "POLICE" across the front of the bike. Different guy & time from #3 above.

Watch out in NJ. There are a TON of Unmarked Chargers and Magnums rolling around that are cops. I see them everywhere. There usually blacked out. But they are bad ass and stealthy.

On the way back from the exotics run on 287 I saw an olive colored charger black wheels, windows tinted black, he had someone pulled over. Very stealthy.

Don't worry. The Chargers are just as slow as the Crown Vic "Police Interceptors" and top-out around 135.

I was on 287 coming north from Somerville area Sunday in my Corvette. Some guy in a dark green Charger came up behind me and started tailgating me. I ignored him. He then pulled up along side, blacked out windows, and was speeding up and slowing down, like he wanted to race. Again, I ignored him. I don't road race for a variety of reasons, most important being that I won't risk dying to prove a point to an idiot.

He got tired of me ignoring him, and he took off. About 10 minutes later, I saw him on the side of the road, having pulled over some guy in a souped up ricer. Yep, it was a cop. Ignoring the guy saved me a major ticket.

This whole shift; tinted windows, always wearing sunglasses, etc. illustrates exactly what is wrong with current law enforcement in this region of the country (and several others).

thats not cool. I am not trying to say that you should have raced him, but he has no right to ride your ass and instigate you. They should give tickets to cops like that. If he was riding you, you should have mashed on your brakes and said you saw a deer or something :) Maybe he wouldnt tailgate people anymore. I get really upset at people who dont keep a safe following distance.

if the Police got Enzos & the Mayor made them buy 120 mph rated tires they would also get 120 mph speed governors :)

In Hawaii, in many areas the cops were given a monthly amount of $ to get their own car, so you could see ANYTHING and it could be a cop car. One of the local cops in my town drove a ratty early 90's Camaro (the 80's Z28 style). Another had a new Explorer. I saw a few Nissan Pathfinder cops and some Altimas. The best was this one cop on the windward side who had a Corvette Stingray for a cop car.

The only way to tell many of them was that they had to have a blue light on top at night. The worst is when you come flying around a corner at night and you see that little blue light on the side of the road nestled against the foliage...

No, not cool at all. And had I gotten his plate, I could have filed a complaint against him. Maybe next time.

As far as slamming on the brakes, thanks, but I'm not looking to use my car as a battering ram and me as a test dummy to make a point. And I'm not looking for any free lawsuits either. He went away, stopped bothering me, and I drove home a happy guy. End of story.

Yeah I wasnt totally serious about that. I was just saying that one day, someone should do something like that to the guy so he would learn his lesson.

Yeah but then not only do you get stuck with the bill for removing his teeth from your trunk, but you get stuck with the bill for his new replacement teeth and your replacement teeth if he's able to walk after the incident.

It's best to not make eye contact & back off.

Amen! Road rage kills enough people out there. No reason for us to contribute to the problem, or volunteer to add to the body count, especially with your own body.

definitely gonna have to memorize the headlights. crown vics i'm sure we can all spot from a mile away.

as for the tailgating and trying to get you to engage in a speed contest, isn't that considered entrapment?

i've seen an '05 mustang gt on 287 around exit 50 or so with people pulled over from time to time. it was black.

The cops are fianally wising up. We just have to be extra careful, think before we act when tempted by a new hemi car, and crank the V1's!

    This sucks...For us at least.
