Loads of fun today, more dismantling. Water pump is off and a new one will go in. Managed to get all the pulleys off down to the base of the crankshaft. Main seal looks as though it’s leaking and accounting for all the grime at the bottom end. Oil pump also leaking, so I’ve removed it and will rebuild it. Same for the tensioner (notice the perished rubber boot). I now have good access to give it all a good scrub

Great work Greg. Have you done a compression and leak-down test? Might be worthwhile since you're this far dismantled, probably only an hour away from hoiking the engine out.

Some things I’d rather not know about!

I have the crankshaft locked at the moment. Once I get the bottom end cleaned up and new seals put in, belts will go back on and I’ll refresh the top end, new plugs, wires, distributor bits etc. it will be easy to do a compression test then with all the manifold bits off. If the numbers are out of whack, I’ll just ignore them and let the next owner worry about it

Hey Greg do you have a photograph of how You locked the crank, for belt replacement purposes I presume?

I’m reliably informed that the best tool to lock a crankshaft with is a torch.

    Uhuh.

You could be working instead, so there's opportunity cost, even though you'd rather play than work....it's still a real cost
