On one of the news channels covering the Katrina disaster last night, there was a caller who spoke briefly with the LA Governor. The caller suggested that they bring in cruise ships from around the Gulf to provide floating aid, food, water and shelter to the tens of thousands of refugees. The Gov. acted as if they were already considering the idea and such, but it was pretty clear from her reaction that she had never heard of it before.

Personally, I thought that was a great idea. A huge cruise ship may hold 6,000 people. They charge perhaps $2K average for a week long cruise. So, lets say FEMA purchases just buy up the entire ship for a number of ships for as long as is needed to find more permanent solutions. It would seem they could get a number of ships on site pretty quick.

Anyone know if anything like this is being contemplated?

    From the AP:

Carnival: Feds ask about using cruise ships in Katrina relief
MIAMI (AP) _ Carnival Cruise Lines said Wednesday that the federal government has asked whether cruise ships could be used as emergency shelters or help in Hurricane Katrina relief efforts in some other way.
The world's largest cruise line said that although ``to undertake such an endeavor would involve many complicated issues, we are actively taking a look at it.''
Carnival operates 21 ships, each of which holds anywhere from about 1,500 to 3,000 passengers.
``It is our intention to work with federal officials to determine the feasibility of moving a ship into the area if that is their desire,'' the Miami-based company said.
Carnival is owned by Carnival Corp.

That's a great idea but what about the people that don't get on the ship.
I think that will create several lawsuits.
Sometimes doing the right thing can get you in trouble:(

    That's been answered above^
Sorry, I don't much care for Blanco

I did hear something about bringing in Navy ships (I'm assuming supply ships). At this point they're planning on and actually implementing the movement of alot of people to Houston and Dallas so it might be a little late by the time they actually get the cruise ships here and ready.

On NBC they said 3 Carnival Cruise ships will be there in 3 days to provide temporary housing for 6,000 people for 6 months.

I'm glad things are finally starting to get together and improving.

There has to be a pool of concert promoters drooling over the idea of a 'Live Aid' type of fund raising event.

It's a decent temporary solution, I guess... A semi-serious question: Will FEMA pay gratuities for all the all the bartenders and porters and cabin maids and masseuses and towel boys?
