My Ex worked at a dealership selling new Lotus's in the Mid 80's to mid 90's.

EVERY SINGLE CAR went to the workshop for paint work before doing to them.

I've heard the same from other dealerships as well, including Ferrari and Mercedes.

What models still get solvent based paint? If that is the case, even more embarrassing. Maybe they know the client these days is going to get a correction/PPF anyways so why not do a half ass paint job.

I can say that my Bianco Italia is water based.

Solvent systems are still used in repair but none in OEM. Solvent systems are much better than water based systems. Wait till you see what's around the corner with clears.

Really didn't appreciate solvent paints until I had two cars I'm restoring (E34 M5 and 560SEC) repainted. I purchased the highest end paint and clear PPG makes for those and was blown away by the finish and how little correction was required. There was a similar post on Rennlist recently re what you get for $12k PTS paint and how far that money would go on a respray by a skilled painter.

I used PPG on a total renovation of a MR2 SW20 . The clear i used was from their Ceramic line . Boy oh boy the finish and actual a Ferrari Colour Grigio Alloy was magnificent.

Im a solvent guy . Basically my business. No one will ever convince me water based is better.

Soulds like sanding marks. A detailer should be able to cut and polish.

I believe the only paints that are currently water based are the following.

    Bianco Italia
    Rosso Cali
    Blu Cali
    RC Met.
    Grigio GTS
    Blu Corsa

The environmental thing about solvents is not so much about paints not having solvents at all, but rather what kind of solvent. What they can't use are the old single stage paints with Urethane based hardeners etc. but there's still lots of paints in the automotive industry that are solvent based.

Yep. It was actually the first. It was used as part of the marketing campaign when the FF debuted with it. Like my Rosso Cali 488, it is not a tri layer. It is expensive because it is water based. Stupid...

Not in this case, this was a poor paint job that couldn't be corrected.

I haven't seen a single one yet, not even from Yugo, Hyundai, Suzuki, Mitsubishi or even an US made car. I would not expect this from any higher end European car, particularly Ferrari. By this, I don't mean to say I don't believe you. I am saying that if you get something like this, you would likely expect in economy, budget cars and not a prestigious luxury brand like Ferrari.

I read about it shortly after I ordered mine. I had an internal battle for quite some time between Fuji and Italia.

Also, the Italia was about 10k less than Fuji, and I think it was initially a double layer paint. Then they made it a triple layer paint and added the extra 10k to the ticket price. I am assuming that they found that people may have shifted to Italia for the 10k less and they decided to make it even to charge the full ticket price. In my opinion, they are the best metallic color whites in the entire car market.

That's terrible and so unlike the Ferrari Prestige.

According to my friend and Indi owner in NYC, the paint job by Ferrari is not as you would think. Almost every one he's seen, has imperfections! What is your issue on yours? Mine has flaws as well / par for the course...
