Hi guys, Just came in from a great FChat day-trip. A 360, a 360 CS (!), a 328, a Mondial T, a Porsche GT3, a Lambo Gallardo spider and my little GT4. Great fun, and I found that in this company, the GT4 really was still quite up to the challenge, despite its 1974 heritage. At a relatively deserted piece of highway I floored it to see how fast it would go. 7800 rpm in 5th gear and still accelerating (and fairly rapidly accelerating at that). I didn't want to over-rev the engine so I backed off at that speed. We all know that the speedometers of our cars are very optimistic. Anyone know how much 260 kph (163 mph) is in real world units? Hans (Man, do I love this car)
aren't they a riot? I have to remind myself all the time and keep saying, "remember its over 30 years old" I'm 7k rpm in 5th? Easy 140 - 145mph
The first are appearing on the Dutch thread now. Okay, texts will probably be unreadable to most here, but the pics speak for themselves http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16406&page=1341 http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16406&page=1342 http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16406&page=1343 Usually, we have a bunch of photographers with us, but this time there was only one, plus our own cameras. Hence the relative lack of in-drive photos.... Hans
Who needs text with pics like those!!! (Except the guy taking a whizz, of course!) Looks like a fun day! JIM
Great pictures Hans! I was trying to read some of the post, i'm not sure but i think someone insulted someone.
The guy in the 328 had a video camera mounted to a suction cup on his rear window. He's now uploading the movie. Screw bed-time! (it's 10pm here)... We're all waiting in anticipation Man, this was NOT your average leisurely drive. We've got a very annoying TV program here called "Road abusers" (or something along those lines - it's in Dutch obviously), where a TV crew is following police video cars on their catches of people who bend traffic laws a bit. Let's say that we've been very serious candidates for this program. Kind of the catch of the century (Doing 7800 rpm in 5th, thinking you're going fast and then being overtaken by that CS with the Gallardo in pursuit. The two of them simply exploded open a half-mile gap on my poor little Dino). It's a good thing the roads were nearly empty when we did that little stunt.... Adrenalin still flowing We really ought to think of using the track or the German Autobahn for these trips next time....
According to the 308 GT4 manual, 7800 rpms is 164.91 mph!!! In a 328, 7800 would be 154 mph. I would have thought the GT4 was similar, but evidently you're pulling much better. Now, of course, this assumes you're running the same profile of tires. If you're running slightly lower profile, you were going slower. Given that a C5 Corvette flew by you, I'd guess that you were going a little slower. Top speed in a C5 Corvette coupe is about 168 in a Convertible and 172 in a Coupe (drag limited.) The C5 would have had to have been using a turbo, supercharger or NOS to have flown by you at 165 mph.
Not a C5 corvette, but a Ferrari 360 CS, as in Challenge Stradale!!! I've got 225/50/16 at the rear, which is the correct profile (even factory option on later years in Europe). So I guess my little GT4 still beats the original factory figures. And to think that aceleration was still very noticable at that speed and that I was simply running out of available RPM's... wow....
Oh, whoops...I quickly glanced at the later post and read CS as C5. I suppose it's time for reading glasses. In that case, a CS could easily blow-by at the top end.
