New points system proposed by FIA

similar to MOTO GP. I like it! Really makes the podium something worth fighting for.

 

More than 9-6-4-3-2-1?

Maybe more than NASCAR, but heading the wrong way.

 

I like it and then add an extra point for fastest lap and pole.

 

I like it too... I always thought that the fascination with having a maximum of 10 points was silly... it's just an arbitrary number... they could make P1 worth 100 points, all that matters is the ratios between the points positions. I don't hate the idea of points for pole or even points for fast lap or such either.

 

Why does 3-4 have the biggest points gap?

 

This is like merging the current system with Bernie's medals system and adding places for the expanded grid. Multiply 2.5 times 10, 8, 6 and you get 25, 20, 15 (no change). The dropoff comes between 3rd and 4th, giving much higher value to finishing on the podium, as commenters have noted.

 

A shame really. Should have been more like 25, 18, 13, 8, 7, etc. But at least the medals won't happen now.

 

I know Mika Hakkinen, and was familiar with his McLaren contract. His contract awarded him money for each point. Interestingly, there was talk of adding a point for pole and fastest lap then, and he was in favor of the system, because his contract was silent on adjusting the pay if the points system changed.

That was 1999, and I am sure that the bigger teams have anticipated the change. But, if they haven't, some guys could reap a windfall. (I'm sure the teams would seek some modification from the FIA.) But it is an interesting point.

I rather like the way the American Powerboat Association does their points: each position is 3/4 of the position ahead, so that the first six positions would be: 40, 30, 23, 17, 13, 10.

If you want to go down to tenth position, the next four point values would be: 7, 5, 4, 3.

 

I liked the pre-Ferrari domination point system of:

1st = 10 pts.
2nd = 6 pts.
3rd = 4 pts

Points for fastest lap means that even if you are out of a chance you can have a go for the fastest lap and thus the spectators will get an impressive demonstration.

They used to have this long before Bernie and Max came along and supposedly saved the sport and made it into the cr@p that it is now. Why people keep giving Bernie credit for making the sport is so far beyond me I just can't get it?. Go and read your history books, the sport of top level motorsport was alive and very kicking before Bernie had stopped pooping his nappies and used to have enormous international prestege/front cover of news paper stuff. Drivers were international stars, etc.

I like lots of points spread to last place.
The only Nascar race I've seen was at TMS recently and J Johnson got smacked first lap.
In a F1 race that would have been his show.
Instead he crawled into the pits, had the car repaired for 20 or so laps, then went out to salvage a few points as an also ran.
Dont know who won the cup but there were several teams scratching and competing to the end. Its what fans, viewers, and sponsors want.

I'm sure there would be more manufacturers left in F1 if points were spread more evenly and deeper into the field.

I'm actually not a fan of this. I am a fan of someone getting a few extra points if they pull off the trifecta (pole, fastest lap, race win).

Sounds like a good idea to pay points down to tenth place as the FIA has proposed. This way top drivers that have a mistake and drop back, or start from the back, have a chance at salvaging some points. Without refueling next year it will definitely make for more passing as teams have to actually race on-track.

Awarding a bonus point for pole and fastest lap sounds like a good idea too. How about a bonus point for the most improvement on your finishing position compared to your starting position?

 

I agree, fastest lap and extra point should receive one bonus point each, but you also should get 1 point for leading a lap, no more than one but one point for leading at least one lap. No additional points for more than one lap.

 

I think they left for two similar reasons.
One; Yes the boards looked at their results (partly measured in points) and couldn't justify the expense and
Two; after the the FOTA war was lost, in which Toyota and BMW were standard bearers, The BernieMax show had it out for them.

 

Seems ok to me.

 

I don't think second place deserves 80% value of a win. But as the FIA strives for mediocrity, err, parity I suppose it makes sense.
Tenth place, jeez, might as well award points to Mr. congeniality.
