Do these guys know anything about F1 history? How about that other points scale: 9-6-4-3-2-1? Formula one teams have proposed a new points scoring system for the 2009 season and beyond. The FOTA alliance fronted a media event in Geneva on Thursday, where they laid out their blueprint for the evolution of the sport. A tweaked points system to be implemented immediately - replacing the current 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 with 12-9-7-5-4-3-2-1 - is one of the major initiatives. A statement said the plan, an alternative to Bernie Ecclestone's rejected 'medals' proposal, would similarly give greater reward to Grand Prix winners. In 2010, a point may be awarded to the team with the fastest race pitstop. Another interesting commitment is to publish race fuel loads, tyre specifications and refuelling data, while next year the teams want to reduce the duration of races from 300km to 250km. Meanwhile, Force India were not represented at Wednesday's FOTA meeting, but on Thursday the press conference was attended by team co-owner and boss Vijay Mallya. Honda's Nick Fry represented the team commonly known as Honda, while Renault boss Flavio Briatore played down speculation the French marque is planning to pull out of the sport. "I have had a commitment from (Renault CEO Carlos) Ghosn that if this more efficient Formula One happens, then we stay just until 2012 like everybody," the Italian said.
I think it's a very good proposal. It makes a bigger difference between #1 and #2 and also a bigger difference between podium positions and 4th place.
Agreed, but this is not a new concept. I guess now that F1 does not have a totally dominant team/driver, its OK to revert to the system that used to be in place. What a bunch of sophists!
Points need to go further back to 12th place or more. I like the Superbike (?) system the was mentioned before. I'm OK with a larger 1st to 2nd to 3rd place spread then a drop off further back.
Great much better than the old points system, now we won't see people settling for 4th instead of 3rd. Not too sure about cutting the race distance from 300km to 250km.
It's difficult to see how that could work, unless of course there is no refueling in 2010 and it would then simply be a competition to see which team can change wheels fastest.
Unless, I guess that the driver jumps out and helps...isn't this WCC points getting mixed up with driver points?
I agree. What's stopping a back marker team from just going into the pits for a quick splash and go just for the point?
Agree on points for fast lap. Fastest in Q already has its own reward, would anyone need the added incentive? As for fastest pit stop, would someone tell them that F1 is not actually a circus
Not to mention someone getting hurt or worse because they're rushing a pit stop, an inherently dangerous situation to begin with, for an extra point...
So in the last 5 laps.. well see the backmackers all rush to the pit lane and do some wheel-nut racing for that single point?!?! what a way to spice up end of the gp. The points for pole and fastest lap sounds a good idea. I think more points for pole than for fastest lap. I like the idea someone could opt to be superfast in qualifying (and be rewarded for it) but at the expense of good race strategy. The current race fuel rule in Q3 is BS IMO. +1. Perhaps after the race?
Perhaps the pitstop point will be a separate event. Can't you here the the announcement " attention! 5 minutes til the pitstop competition" Certainly one of the worst things I have heard in the last few months but it does not top no Canadian GP. Fools.
Yep but that makes sense Dave, and we are talking F1. I often wonder if these rule makers search forums for feedback.. because they bloody well should.
Not that its not a bit of a circus here too, from time to time. Besides we must learn to trust our "betters" While we're at it why not go back to the old rules that awarded F1 points for positions in the Indy 500. You could even rename it the USGP and make everyone happy. And yes sometimes I do scare myself.
