Call me old fashioned, but I would go back to the old system where the points were 10-6-4-3-2-1, where only the top six get points and there is a huge premium for winning. I would then add one point each for P1 qualifier and one point for fastest lap. We went to the current point system after Michael won the championship with 4 races to go in 2004, thus Bernie wanted to spice up the show thru the end of the season. What really pisses me off is when Bernie talks about a medal system and the most gold medals wins, guess what....... in that system Michael would have won the title with more than 6 races to go in 2004!!!
I agree with you... but it was 9 - 6 etc... was that way for years... and worked fine. I think its nice to give other drivers points, but really if you are finishing 5 th or 7th all the time what does it really matter??? points wise.. 1st thru 6th is great... just my opinion.
Seems like a cool concept. I never liked tha fact that the current point system awards consistency, rather than winning. But fastest pitstop? sounds cool. Like someone said, a backmarker can go for and splash and dash and get a point. But i really like for them to introduce points for the fastest lap. 0.5 points per overtaking? Anyone?
One point for either biggest pit lane fire, dragging distance of decoupled fueling hose, or biggest crash at pit out. Kenyan stewards decision.
Or just come in and go straight back out again without doing anything. The idea of points for fastest pit stop is a non-starter.
The pit race point has to relate to team money per point -- a chance for the also-ran teams to get a piece of the broadcast revenues. I think they need to decouple the competition points from the broadcast money. Maybe award team fees by a combination of laps completed and total time their cars were on TV during a race. But if TV money is the only purpose, then how about bikini girl pit crews? The racing would suck, but the cameras wouldn't ever be focussed on the race track, anyway.
Should ensure the driver with the most WINS is the WDC. The other points are politics, show and money from the FIA or Bernie. Consistently not finishing first should not yield a WDC. Just my humble opinion. Wins should matter the most. I know others say, well Schumi ran away from everyone early a few years back and the title was boring. Yes he did and as Mark Webber said, if you dont like Schumi winning, DRIVE FASTER. Enforced parity is not racing is what alot here hate the most---- the FIA meddling. End the medding by rewarding wins.
LOL trust you Dave.. I think somewhere between the two will do!! The FIA meddling is my main gripe. The last 2 seasons have proved to be a close battle and we have some great drivers capable of winning at the min. So IMO a little tweak of the points maybe, but IF it ain't broke why fix it.
Because they have to justify their existence and their salaries. And just because they're p***ks. I still think that we should go back to the pre1960 rule and award points for the Indy 500 and call it the USGP
